Preeti Panigrahi is an Indian actress who starred in the 2024 film Girls Will Be Girls . She received the Special Jury Award for Acting at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival for her performance as a high school student navigating the complexities of adolescence and societal expectations.

Life and career

Preeti Panigrahi was born in 2002 and grew up in India. [1] She attended Hindu College, Delhi University, where she was actively involved in the theatre circuit. [1] She is pursuing further studies in animation at SRFTI. [2] Her passion for acting was inspired by her father's love for theatre. [1]

Panigrahi landed the lead role of Mira in Girls Will Be Girls after responding to an open call in 2022. [1] The audition required participants to submit a video depicting their high school persona. Drawing from her experience as the head girl in school, Preeti played the character of Mira. [1] She prepared for the role by participating in workshops with casting director Dilip Shankar. [1] At the Sundance Film Festival, Girls Will Be Girls won an audience award in the world cinema dramatic competition and Panigrahi's performance earned her a special jury prize. [1] [2] [3] Critic Anupama Chopra wrote, "Panigrahi is the find of the year. Without a trace of strain or drama, she captures the myriad emotions coursing through Mira as she discovers passion, sexuality, unbridled rage, a twisted sort of jealousy, resentment, disappointment and eventually, comfort." Girls Will Be Girls is a 2024 Indian English-language coming-of-age drama film written and directed by Shuchi Talati. It stars Preeti Panigrahi, Kani Kusruti, and Kesav Binoy Kiron. An Indian and French co-production, the film is Talati's feature directorial debut, as well as the acting debut of both Panigrahi and Kiron. The film is set in a boarding school in the Himalayan foothills, and centers around the teenage protagonist Mira's romance with a charming new student, her subsequent sexual awakening, and at times strained relationship to her protective mother.

The MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2023 took place between 27 October and 5 November 2023 in Mumbai, India. It was the first in-person edition of the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it was also the final edition with Anupama Chopra serving as the Festival Director. Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair was named the Head of Jury for the South Asia Competition.
