The non-profit Presidential Management Alumni Group (PMAG) was organized in 1981 to advance the professionalism of public service and augment the education and career development of those who have served in or assisted the Presidential Management Fellowship (PMF) Program. PMAG is not sponsored by OPM. Members are former and current Fellows and other individuals interested in recruitment and development of Federal Government career managers. PMAG sponsors professional and social activities, maintains a network among the over 3,500 former Fellows, and provides support to maintain the PMF Program as the Federal Government's premier mechanism for recruiting future managers. The United States Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is an independent agency of the United States Federal Government that manages the US civilian service. The agency provides federal human resources policy, oversight and support, and tends to healthcare (FEHB) and life insurance (FEGLI) and retirement benefits for federal government employees, retirees and their dependents.

The excepted service is the part of the United States federal civil service that is not part of either the competitive service or the Senior Executive Service. It provides streamlined hiring processes to be used under certain circumstances.

Federal Executive Institute

The Federal Executive Institute (FEI) is an executive and management development and training center for governmental leaders located on a 14-acre (57,000 m2) campus near the center of Charlottesville, Virginia, less than a mile from University of Virginia.

The Sloan Fellows program is the world's first mid-career and senior career master's degree in general management and leadership. It was initially supported by a grant from Alfred P. Sloan, the late CEO of General Motors, to his alma mater, MIT. The program was established in 1930 at the MIT Sloan School of Management. Later it was expanded to the Stanford Graduate School of Business (1957), and London Business School (1968). Considered to be one of the most prestigious management training programs in the world, it targets experienced leaders who have demonstrated success either within organizations, or independently as entrepreneurs. Notable alumni include Kofi Annan, former United Nations Secretary-General and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, John Browne, Baron Browne of Madingley, former chairman and CEO of BP and member of the British House of Lords, and Carly Fiorina, former CEO of Hewlett-Packard.

The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program is a two-year training and leadership development program at a United States government agency, administered by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), for U.S. citizens with a recent graduate degree. After completing the program, agencies may convert PMFs to permanent federal civilian employees.

The Presidential Rank Awards program is an individual award program granted by the United States government to career Senior Executive Service (SES) members and Senior Career Employees within the OPM-allocated Senior-Level (SL) or Scientific-Professional (ST) community. The awards have been given annually by the President of the United States since the establishment of the Senior Executive Service in 1978 except for a brief period of suspension from 2013 to 2014. The Presidential Rank Award honors high-performing senior career employees for "sustained extraordinary accomplishment." Executives from across government are nominated by their agency heads, evaluated by citizen panels, and designated by the president. Winners of these awards are deemed to be "strong leaders", professionals, or scientists who "achieve results" and "consistently demonstrate strength, integrity, industry, and a relentless commitment to excellence in public service".

Linda M. Springer

Linda M. Springer was appointed senior advisor at the White House Office of Management and Budget in February 2017. She served as the eighth Director of the United States Office of Personnel Management. She was unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate in June 2005. Prior to her appointment, Ms. Springer served as controller and head of the Office of Federal Financial Management at the White House Office of Management and Budget. She previously worked for 25 years as an executive and actuary in the insurance and financial services industries.

The Partnership for Public Service is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization based in Washington, D.C. whose mission is to inspire a new generation of civil servants and to transform the way government works.

Dan Gregory Blair currently serves as an independent senior consultant to the U.S. Agency for Global Media. Formerly, Blair served in senior positions in the nonprofit sector. He served as a senior counselor examining and recommending reforms on the presidential appointments process for the Center on Presidential Transition. He also served as Fellow and Senior Counselor at the Bipartisan Policy Center and led a task force of government and private sector management experts charged with examining government oversight issues. He also advises private sector clients on a broad array of government management and postal issues.

IBM Center for The Business of Government

The IBM Center for The Business of Government is an independent business think tank that focuses on management issues in the U.S. Federal government. Founded in 2002, the Center is located in Washington, D.C.

Good government organizations in the United States

The United States has a history of citizen, nonprofit, and other non-partisan groups advocating good government that reaches back to the late-19th-century municipal-level Progressive Movement and the development of governmental professional associations in the early part of the 20th century, such as the American Public Human Services Association and the International City/County Management Association. Many of these groups had their genesis at the Public Administration Center at 1313 East 60th Street, at the University of Chicago.

The Government Performance Coalition was created in 1999 by a group of organizations and researchers with the goal of presenting the President of the United States, government managers, Congress, the media, and the public views on the improvement of government management. The coalition maintains that it seeks to ensure a continued focus and attention to performance and management issues and to identify existing issues that need new attention, and refine past efforts and highlight related governance policies that affect performance. The Coalition, comprising nearly two dozen organizations, meets regularly in Washington, D.C. to serve as a clearinghouse for its individual members’ respective agendas regarding government management improvement. During presidential election years, the Coalition sponsors events to highlight the importance of good government management issues in the campaign and to prepare materials that would be helpful to the winning candidate’s incoming political appointees.

The manananananananas are a series of programs of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management geared toward inviting talented students and recent graduates into federal employment. The programs were instituted as a result of an executive order signed in 2010, which incorporated both preexisting and new programs.

Presidential Innovation Fellows

The Presidential Innovation Fellows program is a competitive fellowship program that pairs top innovators from the private sector, non-profits, and academia with top innovators in government to collaborate on solutions that aim to deliver significant results in months, not years. It was established in 2012 and has operated continuously since then. The program focuses on generating measurable results, using innovation techniques from private industry such as Lean Startup, Design Thinking, and Agile Development.

Government Affairs Institute

The Government Affairs Institute (GAI) at Georgetown University is a non-profit, non-partisan organization whose mission is to provide education and training about congressional processes, organization, and practices, and about selected legislative policy issues. GAI is affiliated with the McCourt School of Public Policy and Georgetown University in Washington, DC. GAI offers a certificate in legislative studies program and conducts a variety of courses on Capitol Hill, and at its offices in Georgetown. The Institute faculty consists of professional educators who are congressional observers and practitioners with backgrounds in political science, public administration, history, and economics, under the direction of Kristin Nicholson, who became GAI Director in 2017. Nicholson was preceded by Kenneth Gold, who served as GAI's director from 1992-2017.

According to the United States Office of Government Ethics, a political appointee is "any employee who is appointed by the President, the Vice President, or agency head". As of 2016, there were around 4,000 political appointment positions which an incoming administration needs to review, and fill or confirm, of which about 1,200 require Senate confirmation. The White House Presidential Personnel Office (PPO) is one of the offices most responsible for political appointees and for assessing candidates to work at or for the White House.

In June 2015, the United States Office of Personnel Management (OPM) announced that it had been the target of a data breach targeting personnel records. Approximately 22.1 million records were affected, including records related to government employees, other people who had undergone background checks, and their friends and family. One of the largest breaches of government data in U.S. history, information that was obtained and exfiltrated in the breach included personally identifiable information such as Social Security numbers, as well as names, dates and places of birth, and addresses. State-sponsored hackers working on behalf of the Chinese government carried out the attack.

The Human Resources University was part of the United States Office of Personnel Management which serves as the national focal point for the development and delivery of human resources training to enhance the capabilities of the Federal workforce. HRU provided services to Federal human resources contractor personnel as well. Since inception HRU had more than 50,000 registered students from across the Federal government. In April 2014 HRU received some publicity for saving the Federal government over $100 million in cost savings in training costs.
