Price Sanond Limited (also known as "PriceSanond") is an internationally oriented law firm based in Bangkok, serving a broad range of multinational corporations having business operations in Thailand.
A law firm is a business entity formed by one or more lawyers to engage in the practice of law. The primary service rendered by a law firm is to advise clients about their legal rights and responsibilities, and to represent clients in civil or criminal cases, business transactions, and other matters in which legal advice and other assistance are sought.
Bangkok is the capital and most populous city of Thailand. It is known in Thai as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon or simply Krung Thep. The city occupies 1,568.7 square kilometres (605.7 sq mi) in the Chao Phraya River delta in central Thailand, and has a population of over eight million, or 12.6 percent of the country's population. Over fourteen million people lived within the surrounding Bangkok Metropolitan Region at the 2010 census, making Bangkok the nation's primate city, significantly dwarfing Thailand's other urban centres in terms of importance.
Thailand, officially the Kingdom of Thailand and formerly known as Siam, is a country at the centre of the Southeast Asian Indochinese peninsula composed of 76 provinces. At 513,120 km2 (198,120 sq mi) and over 68 million people, Thailand is the world's 50th largest country by total area and the 21st-most-populous country. Although nominally a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy, the most recent coup in 2014 established a de facto military dictatorship.
The firm was founded in 1969 by Harvey Price, an American lawyer who had come to Thailand in 1962 serving in the U.S. Peace Corps, Group 1, and PriceSanond is thus one of Thailand’s oldest law firms. [1]
The Peace Corps is a volunteer program run by the United States government. Its official mission is to provide social and economic development abroad through technical assistance, while promoting mutual understanding between Americans and populations served. The program was established by Executive Order 10924, issued by President John F. Kennedy on March 1, 1961 and authorized by Congress on September 21, 1961 with passage of the Peace Corps Act.
The firm practiced under the name of "Price Sanond Prabhas & Wynne" until 1991, when it became associated with the U.S. law firm of "Graham & James" and the Hong Kong law firm of "Deacons" and changed its name to "Deacons Graham & James."
Graham & James LLP is a now-defunct law firm. It was founded as Graham & Morse by Chalmers Graham and Clarence Morse in San Francisco in 1934. Morse left the firm to become chair of the Federal Maritime Commission, and Leonard James, a maritime lawyer who had become friends with Graham and Morse while working for the War Shipping Administration during World War II, became a name partner. The firm was originally a small firm focused on the maritime industry.
Deacons is Hong Kong's oldest and largest independent, full service first-tier law firm. Having integrated into Hong Kong's society for more than 165 years, it benefits from the long-established relationships with Hong Kong’s business community, including the HKSAR Government, local conglomerates such as Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts, Tsui Wah Holdings Limited and Kerry Logistics Network Limited, and multinational corporation such as McDonald’s Corp., Samsung and Yahoo Inc!. The firm has also international connections with other independent law firms around the world through its membership of international networks of independent law firms such as Lex Mundi, Interlex, World Services Group and Employment Law Alliance.
In 1992, the firm in Bangkok expanded its international network by becoming associated with the Australian law firm of "Sly & Weigall" (which also became part of "Deacons Graham & James").
The alliance between Deacons and Graham & James dissolved in June 2000, with Deacons backing out due to Graham & James's failure to commit resources to Asia and dwindling position in US law firm rankings. [2] During that time, Price Sanond remained associated with and practiced under the name Deacons [3] until end of 2011 when it reverted to the old name (two years after Deacons Australia joined Norton Rose). [4]
Mr. Price served for many years as the firm’s managing partner, and is now retired. Andrew Wynne, the current Managing Partner, came to Thailand in 1971, and has been with the firm since 1977.
