The Sudirman Cup is an international badminton mixed team competition contested by member countries of the Badminton World Federation (BWF), the sport's global governing body. The championship has been awarded every two years since the inaugural tournament in 1989. It used to be held at the same venue for the World Championships in the same year until the International Badminton Federation decided to split the two tournaments starting from 2003. There are five matches in every Sudirman Cup tie which consists of men and women's singles, men and women's doubles and mixed doubles. The cup is named after Dick Sudirman, a former Indonesian badminton player and the founder of the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI). The current champion is China, which won its 13th title at the 2023 tournament in China.

The roof of Jeju World Cup Stadium is in the form of nets of traditional fishing boats in Jeju. Jeju hosted several matches of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, after which about 7,000 changeable seats on the upper eastern stand were transferred to the Gangchanghak Practice Stadium, making the total seating capacity in the main stadium 35,657. It also hosted some matches of the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Bungeo-ppang is a fish-shaped pastry stuffed with sweetened red bean paste, which originated from the Japanese taiyaki. One of South Korea's most popular winter street foods, the snack is often sold at street stalls, grilled on an appliance similar to a waffle iron but with a fish-shaped mold. Red bean paste is the standard filling but many bungeo-ppang sold as street food are filled with pastry cream, pizza toppings, chocolate and others. Usually, it costs about 1,000 won (KRW) for three bungeo-ppang. However, small bungeo-ppang costs 1,000 won for five and large bungeo-ppang costs 2,000 won for one, indicating that the price range varies depending on the size.

It was played between South Korea and hosts Australia. Australia won the match 2–1 in extra time and qualified for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia.

The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event with each team consisting of two players from a country. The combined score of each team determined the team results. Individuals also competed for the International Trophy. The winners share of the prize money was $300,000 going to the winning pair and $100,000 to the top individual. The United States team of Fred Couples and Davis Love III won by five strokes over the Zimbabwe team of Mark McNulty and Nick Price. Bernhard Langer of Germany took the International Trophy by three strokes over Couples.
