Prince Regent was launched at Blackwall in 1811. She made ten voyages for the British East India Company (EIC), between 1811 and 1834 to India and China. She made one more voyage to China after the end of the EIC's trading activities in 1833, and was broken up in 1838.

Career

EIC voyage #1 (1812–1813): Captain Thomas Herbert Harris acquired a letter of marque on 16 January 1812. [lower-alpha 1] Captain Harris sailed from Portsmouth on 10 March 1812, bound for Madras and Bengal. Prince Regent reached Madras on 14 July and arrived at Diamond Harbour on 1 August. Homeward bound, she was at Saugor 13 October, reached St Helena on 14 February 1813, and arrived at the Downs on 14 May. [2]

EIC voyage #2 (1814–1815): Captain Harris sailed from Portsmouth on 10 May 1814, bound for Madras, Bengal, and the Moluccas. Prince Regent reached Madras on 16 September and was at Saugor on 23 October. [2] On 10 November she sailed for Amboinya collect the year’s spice harvest and transport it to London.

On 3 February 1815 she reached Amboina. She visited Banda on 20 February, returning to Amboina on 14 March. Homeward bound she reached St Helena on 12 June and arrived at the Downs on 19 August. [2]

EIC voyage #3 (1816–1817): Captain Harris sailed from the Downs on 17 April 1816, bound for Madras and Bengal. Prince Regent reached Madras on 27 July, and arrived at the New Anchorage on 29 August. Homeward bound, she was at Saugor on 17 December, reached the Cape on 17 February 1817 and St Helena on 8 March, and arrived at the Downs on 6 May. [2]

EIC voyage #4 (1818–1819): Captain Harris sailed from Portsmouth on 31 March 1818, bound for Madras and Bengal. Prince Regent reached Madras on 9 July, and arrived at the New Anchorage on 11 August. Homeward bound, she was in the Eastern Channel on 18 December. She reached the Cape on 1 February 1819 and St Helena on 20 February, and arrived at the Downs on 4 May. [2]

EIC voyage #5 (1820–1821): On 28 February 1828 Prince Regent, Captain John Innes, grounded on the South Shore, at Gravesend, Kent, near Pitcher's Dock; she was on her way to Madras and Bengal, and it was expected that she would be got off on the next tide. [5] Captain Innes sailed from Portsmouth on 9 March 1820, bound for Madras and China. Prince Regent reached Madras on 29 June, Penang on 14 August, and Malacca on 31 August. She arrived at Whampoa Anchorage on 25 September. Homeward bound, she crossed the Second Bar on 14 January 1821, reached the Cape on 24 March and St Helena on 15 April, and arrived at the Downs on 10 June. [2]

EIC voyage #6 (1822–1823): Captain Innes sailed from the Downs on 14 May 1822, bound for Madras and Bengal. Prince Regent reached Madras on 26 August and arrived at the New Anchorage on 11 September. Homeward bound, she was at Saugor on 27 December, reached the Cape on 27 February 1823 and St Helena on 14 March, and arrived at the Downs on 11 May. [2]

On 30 July 1823 the EIC chartered Prince Regent from Henry Bonham for three more voyages at a rate of £19 ៛6s 6[pence|d]] per ton for 958 tons. [6]

EIC voyage #7 (1824–1825): Captain Henry Hosmer sailed from the Downs on 23 June 1824, bound for Bengal. Prince Regent arrived at Diamond Harbour on 9 October. Homeward bound, she was at Saugor on 9 January 1825, reached St Helena of 30 April, and arrived at the Downs on 7 June. [2]

EIC voyage #8 (1826–1827): Captain Henry Hosmer sailed from the Downs on 17 May 1826, bound for Madras and Bengal. Prince Regent reached Madras on 30 August, and arrived at Diamond Harbour on 24 September. Homeward bound, she was at Saugor on 2 December, reached St Helena on 6 April 1827, and arrived at the Downs on 22 May. [2]

EIC voyage #9 (1828–1829): Captain Hosmer sailed from the Downs on 13 May 1828, bound for Madras and Bengal. Prince Regent reached Madras on 9 September and arrived at Diamond Harbour on 6 October. Homeward bound, she was at Saugor on 16 January 1829, reached St Helena on 28 April, and arrived at the Downs on 17 June. [2]

On 28 September 1830 Wigram's & Green purchased Prince Regent, at sea, for £6,500. [7] [1] On 12 September 1831 the EIC chartered Prince Regent from Green, Wigram, and Green for £12 4s 6d per ton for 1036 tons for one voyage, out and back. [8]

EIC voyage #10 (1833–1834): Captain Richard Aplin sailed from the Downs on 14 April 1833, bound for China.Price Regent reached Penang on 31 August and arrived at Whampoa on 26 September. Homeward bound, she crossed the Second Bar on 17 January 1834, reached St Helena on 29 March, and arrived back in the Downs on 17 May. [2]

There was one last charter of Prince Regent as a "dismantled ship" on 29 July 1832. The EIC chartered her from Messrs. Wigram for a voyage to Chia and return at a rate of £14 9s 6d per ton for 992 tons. [9]

On 14 March 1833 Prince Regent, Captain Richard Aplin, sailed from London, bound for China. He arrived back in London on 18 May 1834. [1]

The EIC gave up its commercial and shipping activities in 1833.

Fate

In 1838, Prince Regent was sold for breaking up. [1]

Northumberland was launched in 1805. She made six voyages as an extra ship of the British East India Company (EIC), between 1805 and 1818. In 1810 and 1811 she served as a transport in the British invasions of Mauritius and Java. She was sold for breaking up in 1819.

<i>Larkins</i> (1808 ship)

Larkins made ten voyages for the British East India Company (EIC), all as an "extra ship", i.e. under contract. On two of these voyages she first transported convicts to Australia. She also made one convict voyage independently of the EIC. She traded extensively between England and India or China, and in this twice suffered serious but not fatal maritime mishaps. In 1853 she became a coal hulk at Albany, Western Australia, and remained there until she was broken up in 1876.

Retreat was launched in 1801 and briefly sailed as a West Indiaman between London and Jamaica. She then made five voyages for the British East India Company (EIC) as an "extra ship", that is, under charter. She was broken up in 1814.

Moira, was launched at Calcutta in 1813. Between 1820 and 1834 she made four voyages for the British East India Company (EIC) under voyage charters, and transported troops to Burma in 1824. She was lost in 1844.

Lord Keith was launched in 1804 by and for Peter Everitt Mestaer. He chartered her to the East India Company (EIC) for six voyages, and she then went on to make another two voyages for the EIC. On her second voyage, and unusually for an East Indiaman, she participated in the proceeds for the recapture of a former British Royal Navy brig and possibly in a skirmish with a French ship. On her third voyage she participated in a notable action. She was broken up c.1820.

Lord Melville was launched in 1803 as an East Indiaman for the British East India Company (EIC). She made six voyages for the company before she was sold for a hulk in 1817.

Hugh Inglis was launched in 1799 as an East Indiaman. She made seven voyages for the British East India Company (EIC), between 1800 and 1817. In 1810 and 1811 she participated as a transport in two British military campaigns. She was sold for breaking up in 1817.

Phoenix was launched in 1804 as an East Indiaman. She made six voyages for the British East India Company (EIC), between 1805 and 1819. In 1810 and 1811 she participated as a transport in two British military campaigns. She was broken up by 1821.

William Pitt was launched in 1805 as an East Indiaman. She made seven voyages for the British East India Company (EIC), between 1805 and 1819. In 1810 and 1811 she participated as a transport in two British military campaigns. She was sold for breaking up in 1820.

Melville Castle was launched in 1786 as an East Indiaman. She made seven voyages for the British East India Company (EIC). She was sold in 1802 to Dutch owners and wrecked with great loss of life later that year on her first voyage for them.

Contractor was launched in 1779 as an East Indiaman. She made seven voyages for the British East India Company (EIC), and one as transport for a military expedition before her owners sold her in 1800 for use as a transport.

Europa was launched in 1781 as an East Indiaman. She made six voyages for the British East India Company (EIC). She was probably broken up in 1798.

Orient was launched in 1814 at Calcutta. She sailed to England and from then on was based there. She traded with India into the 1830s. She participated in a naval punitive expedition in 1819, and performed four voyages for the British East India Company. From the 1840s she continued to sail widely until she was condemned in 1865 and sold for breaking up.

<i>Atlas</i> (1812 EIC ship) UK merchant ship 1812–1831

Atlas was launched at Kingston upon Hull in 1812 as an East Indiaman. She made nine voyages to India or China for the British East India Company (EIC) before she was sold in 1831 for breaking up.

Sovereign was launched at Rotherhithe in 1800 as a West Indiaman. The British East India Company (EIC) then took her up as an "extra" ship on several contracts; in all she made seven voyages as an East Indiaman for the EIC. After she left the EIC's service in 1817 she continued to trade with India, but under a license from the EIC. She was broken up in 1822.

<i>Thomas Grenville</i> (1808 EIC ship) India-built UK merchant ship 1808–1843

Thomas Grenville was an East Indiaman launched at the Bombay Dockyard for the British East India Company (EIC), and one of only a handful of East Indiamen that it actually owned. She made 14 voyages for the EIC. It sold her in 1834 when it gave up its maritime activities. She was sold for a free trader and burnt in Bombay in June 1843 in a suspicious fire.

Coldstream was launched in 1810. She may have sailed to the West Indies before becoming an extra ship for the British East India Company (EIC) and making nine voyages as an East Indiaman. After the end of the EIC's maritime activities Coldstream made one more voyage to India and China. She disappeared in 1835 while returning to Britain from China.

Marquis of Huntly was launched at Rotherhithe in 1811. She made 11 voyages for the British East India Company (EIC) between 1812 and 1834, when she was broken up.

Castle Huntly was launched at Calcutta in 1812. She then made 11 voyages for the British East India Company (as an Indiaman. After the EIC ceased its shipping business in 1833, new owners continued to sail her between the United Kingdom and China until October 1845 when she was wrecked in the South China Sea.

Asia was launched in 1811 on the River Thames as an East Indiaman. She made 10 voyages for the British East India Company (EIC). She then continued to sail to India and China after the EIC gave up its trading activities in 1834. She was condemned and hulked in 1840.
