Priscilla Ekwere Eleje is the first Director of Currency Operations at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). She is the first woman to have her signature appended on the Nigeria Currency, the naira note. [1] [2]

Background and education

Eleje is a native of Afikpo in Ebonyi State. She obtained a Psychology degree at the University of Jos, Plateau State. She attained the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship in Banking and Management at Boston University, Massachusetts, USA. Also, she is a Certified Information System Auditor (CISA). [3]

Career

Eleje was appointed as the substantive Director of Currency Operations of the Nigerian apex bank, CBN, in August 2018. Prior to her appointment, she held the position in an acting capacity. The first set of naira currency featuring her signature was the 1000 naira note that came into circulation in 2019. [4] Her appointment was lauded by the several women bodies in Nigeria, most notably the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), Nigeria. [5]

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is the central bank and apex monetary authority of Nigeria established by the CBN Act of 1958 and commenced operations on 1 July 1959. The major regulatory objectives of the bank as stated in the CBN Act are to: maintain the external reserves of the country; promote monetary stability and a sound financial environment, and act as a banker of last resort and financial adviser to the federal government. The central bank's role as lender of last resort and adviser to the federal government has sometimes pushed it into murky political controversies. After the end of colonial rule, the desire of the government to become proactive in the development of the economy became visible, especially after the end of the Nigerian civil war, the bank followed the government's desire and took a determined effort to supplement any show shortfalls, credit allocations to the real sector. The bank became involved in lending directly to consumers, contravening its original intention to work through commercial banks in activities involving consumer lending.

The Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company Plc is the Nigerian banknote printer and mint. It is located in both Abuja and Lagos and is majority-owned by the government of Nigeria.

Afikpo North is a Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Nigeria. Its headquarters is in the town of Ehugbo, Afikpo. Important townships include Ehugbo Unwana and Amasiri. Other notable areas are Ibii and Akpoha.
