Public Service Media (abbreviation: PSM) is the state-owned public service company formed by the Public Service Media Act (9/2015).

History

PSM was formed on 28 April 2015 under the Public Service Media Act (9/2015) after then-President Abdulla Yameen ratified the new bill, which journalists say that would undermine press freedom. [2] [3] The International Federation of Journalists condemned the new law calling it a 'state mouthpiece'. [4] [5]

Prior to PSM being the state media, its predecessor was the Maldives Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) created by then-President Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik from 14 February 2012 - 27 April 2015. [6] [7] [8]

Prior to MBC being the state media, its predecessor was the Maldives National Broadcasting Corporation (MNBC) created by then-President Mohamed Nasheed from 22 December 2008 - 13 February 2012. [7] [9]

Ibrahim Nasir Rannabandeyri Kilegefan, , commonly known as Ibrahim Nasir, was a Maldivian politician who served as the Prime Minister of the Maldives from 1957 to 1968 under the monarchy, and later the first President of the Second Republic of Maldives from 1968 to 1978. Nasir served two terms, then he decided to retire, even though the People's Majlis voted him in for a third term. Nasir adhered to the non-aligned ideology and was a staunch anti-imperialist. Nasir is remembered as an independence hero for guiding the Maldives to independence from the British Empire, he is also credited for establishing the tourism industry in the Maldives, as well as rapidly modernizing and developing the country and economy.

Hassan Evan Naseem, commonly referred to as Evan Naseem, was a Maldivian man whose death became a lever for the current, open, political reform activities in the Maldives. He was serving a jail term at Maafushi Prison for drug offences when he was beaten to death by the National Security Service personnel of the Security unit during a riot which endangered the lives of the prison security personnel.

The Constitution of the Maldives is the supreme law of the country of Maldives. It provides the legal foundation for the existence of the Republic of Maldives, sets out the rights and duties of the citizens of the Maldives, and defines the structure of the Government of the Maldives. The current Constitution of the Maldives was ratified by the then president, Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom, on 7 August 2008, and came into effect immediately, replacing and repealing the Constitution of 1998.

On Saturday September 20, 2003 civil unrest broke out in Malé, the capital city of the Maldives. This unrest was provoked by the death of Hassan Evan Naseem at Maafushi Prison – located on a separate inhabited island – and the subsequent shooting at the same prison, that killed 3 and injured 17 others.

It runs two radio channels, Voice of Maldives on 1458 kHz AM with a live internet stream and Raajje FM (entertainment).

The Cabinet of the Maldives is the most senior level of the executive branch of the Government of the Maldives. It is made up of the President, the Vice President, Attorney General and the Ministers.

Presidential elections were held in the Maldives on 7, 9 and 16 November 2013. The first round was held on 7 September. As no candidate received a majority, a second round was planned to be held in 28 September between the candidates who received the most votes in the first round, former President Mohamed Nasheed and Abdulla Yameen, paternal half-brother of former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. Incumbent President Mohammed Waheed Hassan was eliminated in the first round after receiving less votes than three other candidates.

Human rights in the Maldives, an archipelagic nation of 417,000 people off the coast of the Indian Subcontinent, is a contentious issue. In its 2011 Freedom in the World report, Freedom House declared the Maldives "Partly Free", claiming a reform process which had made headway in 2009 and 2010 had stalled. The United States Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor claims in their 2012 report on human rights practices in the country that the most significant problems are corruption, lack of religious freedom, and abuse and unequal treatment of women.

Husnu Al Suood born in Meedhoo is a Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Maldives since 8 December 2019. He was the Attorney General of the Maldives from June 2009 to August 2010. He served as the Chief Judge of the Civil Court and as a member of the Judicial Service Commission of Maldives. He also served as a member of the National Human Rights Commission of the Maldives from 2003 to 2005. As a member of the Special Majlis, Suood participated in drafting the current constitution of the Republic of Maldives.
