PureVolume (formerly Unborn Media) was a website for uploading and streaming of music files, the first independently run of its type. PureVolume was created by Unborn Media, Inc; Mitchell Pavao; Brett Woitunski; and Nate Hudson, all from the University of Massachusetts.

PureVolume is a website for the discovery and promotion of new music and emerging artists. The mission was to give artists a new promotion tool. Each artist had a profile that typically contains basic info, updates, photos, shows and music for streaming. Artists had the option of making each of their songs available for free download. Listeners and fans were also able to create profiles to interact with artists and each other, as well as track and share music they liked. PureVolume went through several layout changes and a change from orange to blue, but the layout from the homepage to the artist profiles remained essentially the same since 2003.

The focus is on promoting "indie" music groups and artists, but some of them have become popular. [1]

It was acquired by pop culture media conglomerate SpinMedia in 2010.

History

The idea to create PureVolume was that of officer/creator Woitunski after gaining advance knowledge that CNET planned to take mp3.com offline upon acquisition, slated for late 2003. PureVolume.com launched in beta on Thanksgiving Eve of 2003, with 'The Suicide Pact' as the main featured band. Prior to the launch of PureVolume, Unborn Media had designed local business websites in Amherst, Massachusetts. It was thought of as a 'magazine' with sound.

The homepage would have both split of editorial and paid placement, with the content rotating within each spot except the "PurePicks" section, a weekly recommendation of eight new artists for users to enjoy. For all of 2003 and 2004 and the first four months of 2006, that was Welch's task. It was taken over by both Brett and Mike, and the distinct musical taste gave the homepage a new feel and began a new chapter for the brand.

More predominantly in the site's early years, indie labels looked to the site for new artists, the "PurePicks" were put out each week. After two weeks in the section, Gym Class Heroes were in a meeting with Fueled by Ramen Records, the first band to be 'discovered' on PureVolume, which opened a new chapter in the world of music.

On June 30, 2018, PureVolume shut down its music service.

Influence

Record labels used PureVolume to promote their artists and even looked for new ones to sign. The first artists to link a record deal directly to their PureVolume page were the Gym Class Heroes. The fame of groups such as Paramore, Boys Like Girls, Fall Out Boy, [1] [2] All Time Low, He Is We, My American Heart, Daphne Loves Derby, [1] Taking Back Sunday, My Chemical Romance, Forever The Sickest Kids, Panic! at the Disco, Twenty One Pilots, Brand New, [2] The Scene Aesthetic [3] and The Spin Room have been credited to exposure on PureVolume.

Laika were an English band formed in 1993 and helmed by Margaret Fiedler and Guy Fixsen. Their lineup also included John Frenett (bass), Lou Ciccotelli (drums), Louise Elliot, and Rob Ellis (drums). Laika were founded following Fiedler and Frenett's departure from the band Moonshake; Laika's other members had previously worked with different artists on the roster of Moonshake's label Too Pure. Laika's experimental style blended diverse genres, including electronica, krautrock, dub, hip hop, and jazz. They released their debut album Silver Apples of the Moon in 1994, and followed with 1997's Sounds of the Satellites, both to critical praise. Laika released two subsequent albums, 2000's Good Looking Blues and 2003's Wherever I Am I Am What Is Missing, after which they entered an indefinite hiatus. As of July 2022, the band's website was listed as inactive and for sale, and as of March 2024 has been purchased by a different organization and is no longer associated with the band.

The band left gr8! records in 2010 to start their own label, Super Echo. In 2012, they signed with Victor Entertainment's Speedstar Records label.

The site was also used by music fans to discover new independent artists in the site's vast collection. Some music content was Creative Commons-licensed, as announced in 2004. GarageBand.com closed its doors in June 2010, offering users migration to iLike.

Sleepaway was a piano-driven indie rock band from Buffalo, New York.

Makeoutclub.com was an early social networking website, the first that catered to youth and indie music culture. Launched in 1999 by Gibby Miller, Makeoutclub introduced features and concepts that later became standard in social networking sites.

LoveLikeFire is a San Francisco-based indie rock band. The group was formed in 2006 and whilst an unsigned artist they independently released two EPs, Bed of Gold (2006) and An Ocean in the Air (2007), as well as mounted a self-organized national tour to promote the latter release. The band then signed to Heist Or Hit Records and a full-length album was released in the UK in Autumn 2009. This album Tear Ourselves Away was released in the US in early 2010. Wallpaper is an American hip hop and pop music project, fronted by producer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter Eric Frederic based in Oakland, California. Wallpaper is signed to Boardwalk Records/Epic Records and has played at SXSW. The band is known for their lyrics, which Frederic has characterized as satire of pop music and consumer culture, as well as for their early use of exaggerated auto-tune.

The Narrative is an American independent indie rock band from Long Island, New York, formed in 2008. They are currently based in Nashville, Tennessee. Since 2011, the band has consisted of Suzie Zeldin and Jesse Gabriel. Previously, the group featured the drummer Charlie Seich. The group started its musical career with their debut EP Just Say Yes, released in 2008, where "Eyes Closed" stands out as the most popular song with more than four million views on YouTube.
