Purnesh Modi is an MLA from Gujarat Legislative Assembly. He won the by-election for the 13th Legislative Assembly in Gujarat, which was facilitated following the death of the then MLA Kishor Vankawala. He lives in Adajan Area, Surat along with his family. [1]

Political career

Modi won the by-elections held on 4 December 2013 for the vacated seat of Surat West Assembly constituency. [2] He further got elected from the same seat for the 2017 and 2022 elections.

Rahul Gandhi case In 2019, Modi filed a criminal defamation case against Wayanad MP, Rahul Gandhi for a speech comparing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with fugitives like Lalit Modi and Nirav Modi through their surname. [3] [4] [5] Gandhi remarked; "Why do all thieves, be it Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi or Narendra Modi, have Modi in their names." [6] [7]

Purnesh Modi had the distinction of being a party that had requested a stay on a case that he himself started. The stay was lifted after the judge was changed. [8] On 23 March 2023, the Surat court convicted Gandhi and sentenced him for two years of imprisonment. Following the Representation of People Act, 1951, Gandhi was disqualified as member of the Lok Sabha on 24 March 2023. [9] [10] On 4 August, Gandhi's conviction was stayed by the Supreme Court of India pending appeal. [11]

He has also served as the BJP Vice President of Kerala state. He is also a former member of Lok Sabha from Kannur and ex-MLA from Kannur constituency of Kerala state.

The 2012 Gujarat Legislative Assembly elections were held in the Indian state of Gujarat in December 2012 for all 182 members of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. Incumbent Chief Minister Narendra Modi of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), in power since 2002, was running for his fourth term. The leader of the opposition was Shaktisinh Gohil of the Indian National Congress (INC).

Supreme Court of India, in its judgement dated 10 July 2013 while disposing the Lily Thomas v. Union of India case, ruled that any Member of Parliament (MP), Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) or Member of a Legislative Council (MLC) who is convicted of a crime and given a minimum of two years' imprisonment, loses membership of the House with immediate effect. This is in contrast to the earlier position, wherein convicted members held on to their seats until they exhausted all judicial remedy in lower, state and supreme court of India. Further, Section 8(4) of the Representation of the People Act, which allowed elected representatives three months to appeal their conviction, was declared unconstitutional by the bench of Justice A. The Indian general election of 2014 were held to constitute the 16th Lok Sabha in India. Voting took place in all 543 parliamentary constituencies of India to elect members of parliament in the Lok Sabha. The result of this election was declared on 16 May. Parbhubhai Nagarbhai Vasava ( Prabhu) (born 1 March 1970) is an Indian politician and a member of Lok Sabha from Bardoli (Lok Sabha constituency), Gujarat. He was a Congress MLA from Mandvi in 2012, but joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2014. He won from Bardoli in 2014 and 2019 as a BJP candidate.

Chowkidar Chor Hai is a Hindi slogan used by the Indian National Congress (INC) in its election campaign for the 2019 Indian general election. The slogan was coined by the then INC president, Rahul Gandhi, against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) affiliated sitting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after raising allegations of favouritism and price escalation in the Dassault Rafale deal. Rutvikbhai Lavjibhai Makwana is an Indian politician. He serves as Member of legislative assembly from Chotila constituency. He is a member of the Indian National Congress. Makwana defeated the BJP's Dervaliya Zinabhai Najabhai in the 2017 election. He was appointed chief organiser of 'Gujarat Pradesh Seva Dal' by Rahul Gandhi in October 2018.

The disqualification of Rahul Gandhi as member of the Lok Sabha occurred on 24 March 2023 after an Indian court convicted Gandhi and sentenced him for two-year imprisonment on charges of criminal defamation for comments he made about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's surname. It has raised alarms about the state of democracy in India and is seen as another move to silence dissent and political opponents before the upcoming 2024 general elections. However, in August, the Supreme Court of India stayed his conviction which allowed him to contest the next election and to reinstated as an MP for Wayanad.
