Quaker Mill Company

The Quaker Mill Company was a 19th-century American oat mill company in Ravenna, Ohio. After merging with three other companies in 1901, the company became the Quaker Oats Company. Today it is a subsidiary of PepsiCo.

History

Henry D. Seymour and William Heston founded the Quaker Mill in Ravenna. On 4 September 1877 Seymour trademarked the Quaker brand after reading an encyclopedia article on Quakers, who are officially called the Religious Society of Friends. [1] The article ascribed integrity, honesty, and purity to the Quakers, which Seymour realized would be favorable attributes to impute to his company's breakfast cereal, particularly in an era of food impurities. [1] By 1888, the company employed 83 people, and (in a tie with the Ravenna Glass Company) was Ravenna's largest employer. [2]

Quaker Square was a shopping and dining complex located in downtown Akron, Ohio which is now used by the University of Akron. Quaker Square was the original Quaker Oats factory; the complex consists of the former mill, factory, and silos. The buildings were bought in the early 1970s by developers who sought to create a unique, useful home for shops and restaurants. The buildings were bought by the University of Akron in 2007. The hotel has been converted to a residence hall. The retail space consisted of dozens of small shops and restaurants, and there were large areas of historic exhibits on such areas as the local Quaker industry and history of radio in Akron, while offices were on the floors above. Quaker Square was open to the general public until September 18, 2015. After that, the hotel no longer accepted reservations as the former hotel rooms and the entire complex began to be operated exclusively for student and university use. The University fully vacated the facility by 2022.

Henry Parsons Crowell (1855–1944) was an American businessman and philanthropist. In 1881, Crowell purchased the Quaker Mill Company, and subsequently the brand name Quaker, and launched the first breakfast cereal advertising campaign in a magazine. He also purchased the bankrupt Quaker Oat Mill Company. In 1901, he founded the Quaker Oats Company.

Anderson, Clayton and Company was a cotton trading firm started in Oklahoma City by Frank Anderson, Monroe Anderson and William Clayton. These three men formed a partnership on August 1, 1904. The company moved to Houston early in the 20th Century because that city was gaining on Galveston for the title of Cotton Capital of the U.S. after the near-complete destruction of that port by the 1900 Galveston hurricane, and on account of Houston's rapidly expanding shipping facilities. In time the company became the world's largest cotton-trading company.
