Qui Nguyen is an American playwright, screenwriter and director. [1] He is best known for his plays She Kills Monsters and Vietgone. He is also known for writing Raya and the Last Dragon and Strange World .

Career

He is a playwright, TV writer and screenwriter, and also an artistic director of the Obie Award [2] and Caffe Cino Award [3] winning Vampire Cowboys Theatre Company, whose productions, penned and choreographed by Nguyen, have performed to sold-out audiences at the New York International Fringe Festival, been published nationally in Plays and Playwrights 2005, [4] enjoyed extended runs throughout the nation, and have been nominated [5] [6] for and received awards [7] in movement and fight direction. In 2019 he won the Porter Prize. [8]

Nguyen’s plays include Vietgone, Soul Samurai, The Inexplicable Redemption of Agent G, Alice in Slasherland, Fight Girl Battle World, Krunk Fu Battle Battle, She Kills Monsters , Trial By Water, Living Dead in Denmark, Stained Glass Ugly, A Beginner's Guide to Deicide, Men of Steel, Bike Wreck, and Vampire Cowboy Trilogy. He is a member of New Dramatists, [9] Ensemble Studio Theatre, The Playwrights' Center, and the Ma-Yi Theater Company's Writers Lab. He also began writing for Marvel Studios in 2016. His work with the Vampire Cowboys, particularly in the staging of martial arts, puppetry and multimedia use has been documented in a dissertation from the Drama Department at Tufts University. [10] In March 2019, he debuted Poor Yella Rednecks, a sequel to Vietgone at the South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa, CA. In February 2020, he debuted Revenge Song, a commissioned musical, at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles. "Revenge Song" is currently running at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon.

Nguyen is developing a musical commissioned by the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts with songwriter Adam Gwon. [11]

As a screenwriter, Nguyen has written on AMC's Dispatches from Elsewhere , Netflix's The Society , Syfy's Incorporated , and PBS's Peg + Cat . He co-wrote Walt Disney Animation Studios' Raya and the Last Dragon along with Adele Lim [12] and wrote and co-directed Disney Animation's 2022 film Strange World . [13] In 2024, he directed the feature documentary The Family Vietgone. [14]

Vampire Cowboys Theatre Company is an Obie Award and Caffe Cino Award winning NYC downtown theatre company first established in 2000, with a mission towards the creation and production of theatrical events based in stage combat and dark comedy with a comic book edge. They began on the campus of Ohio University, moving to NYC in 2002. The company has been a resident company at Center Stage, NY (2005–2008), HERE Arts Center (2009–2010), Incubator Arts Project (2011–2013), and The New Ohio Theater & IRT (2013–2015). The company is led by artistic director Qui Nguyen and Robert Ross Parker. Past productions include the cult Off-Off Broadway shows: Geek!, The Inexplicable Redemption of Agent G, Alice in Slasherland, Soul Samurai, Fight Girl Battle World, Men of Steel, Vampire Cowboy Trilogy, and Living Dead in Denmark, which featured special effects by Chuck Varga, co-founder of the shock rock band GWAR. The first theatre company to ever be sponsored by New York Comic Con, Vampire Cowboys is often credited for being the pioneers of "Geek Theatre", a subgenre of theatre that often incorporates action-adventure, sci-fi, gaming, and/or comic book themes into live theatre. The company was praised by The Village Voice as "New York's Best Army of Geeks". The Vampire Cowboys had their work documented in a doctoral dissertation on martial arts on the American stage from Tufts University in 2011.

Tommy Murphy is an Australian playwright, screenwriter, adaptor and director. He created and was head writer for the 2022 TV series Significant Others. He is best known for his stage and screen adaptation of Timothy Conigrave's memoir Holding the Man. His most recent plays are a stage adaptation of Nevil Shute’s On The Beach, Mark Colvin's Kidney and Packer & Sons.

Raya and the Last Dragon is a 2021 American animated fantasy action adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It was directed by Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada, co-directed by Paul Briggs and John Ripa, and produced by Osnat Shurer and Peter Del Vecho. The screenplay, which is based on story ideas by Bradley Raymond and Helen Kalafatic, was primarily written by Qui Nguyen and Adele Lim with additional contributions from other writers, including Briggs, Hall, Estrada, Ripa, Dean Wellins, and Kiel Murray. Raya is a fictional character in Walt Disney Animation Studios' animated film Raya and the Last Dragon (2021). Created by screenwriters Adele Lim and Qui Nguyen, Raya is the thirteenth official member of the Disney Princess line-up and Disney's first Southeast Asian princess. She is voiced by American actress Kelly Marie Tran. Cassie Steele was initially cast in the role until the character underwent changes and the filmmakers decided to find a different type of performer for Raya and replaced her with Tran.
