R. D. Burman: The Man The Music is a 2011 Indian English language non-fiction book written by Anirudha Bhattacharjee and Balaji Vittal. The subject of the book is R. D. Burman. [1] It won the 2011 National Film Award for Best Book on Cinema. [2]

The book was written when both the authors were changing jobs, and they wanted to use the time to go back to memories of the late 1960s through to the late 1980s. The working title of the book was The Pancham Caravan. The first three chapters were written and submitted to Shantanu Ray Chaudhuri, Managing Editor, HarperCollins India in January 2009, who gave the go-ahead in 30 minutes. The contract was signed at Delhi Hat, on February 14, 2009.

Writing this book entailed multiple tasks, the most important one of which was meeting the musicians with whom R D Burman had worked. The first person to be interviewed for the book was ace guitarist Ramesh Iyer. The manuscript was completed in October 2010.

The book had multi-city launches, with the first one at The Oxford Book Shop, Mumbai, on April 26, 2011. [3] [4] [5] Subsequent launches happened at Crossword, Kolkata, at India Habitat Center, New Delhi. Launches were also held at Jaipur and at Chennai. [6]

The book opened to raving reviews [7] [8] [9] and was nominated for the Shakti Bhatt Award in 2011. [10] It went on to win the National Film Award for Best Book on Cinema at the 59th National Film Awards in 2011. [11]

The book has been the subject of multiple music cum talk shows in India, the UAE, London and Singapore. [12] [13] [14] [15] [16]

<i>Aandhi</i> 1975 film by Gulzar

Aandhi (transl. 'Storm') is a 1975 Indian political drama film starring Sanjeev Kumar and Suchitra Sen, and directed by Gulzar. At the time it was alleged that the film was based on the life of the then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and her relationship with her estranged husband, but in reality, only the look was inspired by the politician Tarkeshwari Sinha and Indira Gandhi. The story is based on a chance meeting of an estranged couple after several years, when wife Aarti Devi, now a leading politician happens to stay in the hotel run by her husband during an election campaign. The movie is noted for its songs composed by Rahul Dev Burman, written by Gulzar and sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar.

Shalimar is a 1978 bi-lingual Bollywood film, written and directed by Krishna Shah. The movie starred Dharmendra, Zeenat Aman, Sir Rex Harrison, Shammi Kapoor, John Saxon and Sylvia Miles. English actor Sir Rex Harrison and American actors John Saxon and Sylvia Miles played important roles in their first and only Bollywood film. Jayamalini does a dance number in the film. This was the last time that Mohammed Rafi's voice was picturized on Shammi Kapoor. Its English version is known as Raiders of the Sacred Stone. Rex Harrison's voice was dubbed by Kader Khan. The plot is inspired by the novel The Vulture is a Patient Bird by James Hadley Chase, The film's script was novelized by Manohar Malagaonkar. Shalimar is the most expensive movie ever made in India. The English version of the movie was released in the United States titled as the Raiders of the Sacred Stone.

<i>Amar Prem</i> 1972 Indian film

Amar Prem is a 1972 Indian Hindi romantic drama film directed by Shakti Samanta. It is a remake of the Bengali's Classic film Nishi Padma (1970) starring Uttam Kumar and Sabitri Chatterjee, directed by Arabinda Mukherjee, who wrote screenplay for both the films based on the Bengali short story Hinger Kochuri by Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay. The film portrays the decline of human values and relationships and contrasts it by presenting an illustrious example of a boy's innocent love for a neighbourhood courtesan. The movie is about a school boy, who is ill-treated by his step mother, and becomes friends with a prostitute neighbour. The film stars Sharmila Tagore playing a prostitute with a heart of gold, with Rajesh Khanna in the role of a lonely businessman and Vinod Mehra as adult Nandu, the young child, who they both come to care for.

Hum Kisise Kum Naheen is a 1977 Indian musical drama film produced and directed by Nasir Hussain. It took the third top spot at the box office in 1977. The film stars Rishi Kapoor, Tariq Khan, Kaajal Kiran, Amjad Khan and Zeenat Aman in a special appearance. Mohammed Rafi received his only National Film Award for this film.

Mili is a 1975 Indian Hindi-language romantic drama film directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. It starred Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan and Ashok Kumar. Jaya Bachchan received a Filmfare nomination as Best Actress, the only nomination for the film. The film was later remade in Telugu in 1976 as Jyothi starring Jayasudha in the title role.

He started his career with music director S.D. Burman as a lyricist in the 1963 film Bandini and worked with many music directors including R. D. Burman, Salil Chowdhury, Vishal Bhardwaj and A. R. Rahman. Gulzar also writes poetry, dialogues and scripts. He directed films such as Aandhi and Mausam during the 1970s and the TV series Mirza Ghalib in the 1980s. He also directed Kirdaar in 1993.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">S. D. Burman</span> Indian singer and composer (1906–1975)

Sachin Dev Burman was an Indian music director and singer. A member of the Tripura royal family, he started his career with Bengali films in 1937. He later began composing for Hindi movies and became one of the most successful and influential Indian film music composers. Burman composed the soundtracks for over 100 movies, including Bengali films and Hindi. Apart from being a versatile composer, he also sang songs in the light semi-classical and folk style of Bengal. His son, R. D. Burman, was also a celebrated music composer for Bollywood films.

"Chadti Jawani Meri Chaal Mastani" is a Bollywood film song from the 1971 film Caravan. The song became popular along with other songs from the movie and was a hit; all were composed by R. D. Burman, who was nominated for the Filmfare Best Music Director Award. It also brought fame to actress Aruna Irani who performs in this item number. The song has been remixed by various artists, of which the remix with "The Ketchup Song" became popular for its seductive video and was criticized for obscenity.

This was coming back of Duo brothers Dev Anand and Vijay Anand. Jwala Daku is a 1981 Bollywood Hindi action film, directed by R.P. Swamy and produced by Swaran Singh. The film was released on 14 April 1981 under the banner of Swarn Films.

Gold Award for Best Television Show (Fiction) is an award given as part of its annual Gold Awards for Indian television, to recognize the most popular fiction show of the year.
