Rachel Chandler is an American modeling executive and casting director focused on "street-cast kids" [1] [2] [3] and has been praised for "defying gender norms" in advancing diversity and giving special attention to atypical and transgender models. [4] [5] [6]
Chandler was born in Los Angeles, and lived in the Midlands of England as a child in the mid-1990s and settled in New York at 18 to study Art History at the Gallatin School in 2005. [7] [8] [9]
She married Tom Guinness, holding a small February 2012 wedding ceremony for family in Los Angeles and a Spring 2013 "shamanic" service at Lypiatt Park, owned by friend Daniel Chadwick in Gloucestershire, England. [10] [11] [12] She later married Nate Lowman, and gave birth to a son named Wallace in July 2017. [13] [14]
She is the godmother of Fabiola Beracasa Beckman's child. [15]
Chandler allegedly started her career as a DJ [16] [17] but apparently used it to pursue her vocation as a photographer, [18] [19] She lists her favourite photographers as Robert Mapplethorpe, Guy Bourdin and Irving Penn, and notes frequently watching the Nazisploitation film The Night Porter. [7]
She seemingly worked as a photographer at events including Vogue's 2011 galas for the Museum of Contemporary Art and Museum of Modern Art. [20] [21] The MOCA event drew criticism for Marina Abramovic's exhibits. [22] Chandler had been a photographer at Abramovic's magnum opus "The Artist is Present" living portrait in 2010 [23] and also worked with Abramovic's colleague Terence Koh multiple times. [24] [25] [26]
In 2012, Chandler photographed the Royal Family's Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip and Prince Andrew attending the Royal Ascot. [27]
She served as a DJ at the Standard Hotel and The Beatrice Inn as well as private parties. [7] [18] [28] In 2014 she served as the DJ for the Art Production Fund's "White Gloves Gone Wild" gala. [29] She also served on the Studio Party Benefit Committee for the Whitney Museum. [30]
In November 2014, Chandler attended United Nations Foundation event in Support of Global Childhood Vaccines. [31]
In March 2016, Chandler helped produce the Balenciaga fashion show with Demna Gvsalia. [32] [33]
In September 2016, Chandler and Walter Pearce launched a new modeling agency named Midland Modelling seeking a higher clientele for their models previously appearing for Eckhaus Latta and Hood by Air, while pursuing what she described as "a cultural shift in what it means to be beautiful". [18] [1]
