Mohammed Rafeek Sayedali Shah is a South African politician from KwaZulu-Natal. He represented the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the National Assembly from 2004 to 2009 and from 2012 to 2014, and later in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature from 2014 to 2019. In 2022, he announced that he had left the DA to join ActionSA.

Legislative career

Shah was elected to the National Assembly in the 2004 general election, representing the DA in the KwaZulu-Natal constituency. [1] He was not initially re-elected in 2009, but he rejoined the National Assembly between 2012 and 2014, filling a mid-term casual vacancy. [2]

In the next general election in 2014, he was elected to represented the DA in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature, ranked ninth on the party's provincial list. [2] During the legislative term that followed, he served as the DA's provincial spokesperson in the transport portfolio. [3]

In the 2019 general election, he stood for election both to the National Assembly and to the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature, but he was not ranked highly enough to gain a seat in either. [2] In December 2022, he announced that he had left the DA to join ActionSA, a recently established opposition party. [4]

A member of the Democratic Alliance, he is currently the youngest Member of the National Assembly. Ngcobo served as a DA councillor in the Richmond Local Municipality from 2016 to 2019.

KwaZulu-Natal is one of the nine multi-member constituencies of the National Assembly of South Africa, the lower house of the Parliament of South Africa, the national legislature of South Africa. The constituency was established in 1994 when the National Assembly was established by the Interim Constitution following the end of Apartheid. It is conterminous with the province of KwaZulu-Natal. The constituency currently elects 41 of the 400 members of the National Assembly using the closed party-list proportional representation electoral system. At the 2019 general election it had 5,524,666 registered electors.

Vusumuzi Cyril Xaba is a South African politician and a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since 2019. He is currently serving as Co-Chairperson of the Joint Standing Committee on Defence and as Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans. A member of the African National Congress, he previously served in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature from 1994 to 2009 and from 2014 to 2019. He was the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development from 2014 to 2016.

Zwelifile Christopher Ntuli was a South African politician and member of the African National Congress who served as a member of the National Assembly of South Africa from 2009 until his election to the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature in 2014. Ntuli left the legislature at the 2019 election.

Lungi Mnganga-Gcabashe is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2014 to 2019. In 2020 she was appointed chief of staff in the office of Pemmy Majodina, the Chief Whip of the Majority Party in the National Assembly. She was formerly a Member of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature from 1999 to 2004 and chaired the KwaZulu-Natal branch of the ANC Women's League from 2008 to 2012. She was elected to five-year terms on the ANC's National Executive Committee in 2012 and 2022.

Gloria Nonzwakazi Swartbooi-Ntombela is a South African politician who currently represents the African National Congress (ANC) in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature. She was born in the Eastern Cape and joined the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature during its second administration from 1999 to 2004. Most recently, she was re-elected to her legislative seat in the 2014 general election, ranked 45th on the ANC's provincial party list, and in the 2019 general election, ranked 34th.

Sipho Caiphas "KK" Nkosi is a South African politician who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature since 2009. He has chaired the legislature's Portfolio Committee on Finance since 2014.

Celiwe Qhamkile Madlopha is a South African politician who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature since 2019. Before that, she was a Member of the National Assembly between 2010 and 2019. She is also a former Provincial Chairperson of the ANC Women's League in KwaZulu-Natal.

Sipho Joseph Gcabashe is a South African politician and businessman who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature until 2019, when he failed to gain re-election. He was also Provincial Secretary of the ANC's KwaZulu-Natal branch from 1996 to 2005.

Bonginkosi Meshack Radebe is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature until May 2019. He was formerly Deputy Speaker in the legislature and also served as a Member of the Executive Council (MEC) in KwaZulu-Natal from 2009 to 2014. He was known for his role in mediating the political violence between the ANC and Inkatha in Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal in the 1990s.

Bonga Nkanyiso Mdletshe is a South African politician and traditional leader who represented the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature from 1996 to 2014. During this period, he served as Speaker in the legislature from 1998 to 2004. A lawyer by training, he entered politics during apartheid as a member of the government of the former bantustan of KwaZulu.

Mtholephi Emmanuel Mthimkhulu was a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature from 1999 until his death in 2015. Formerly a teacher and journalist, he served as KwaZulu-Natal's Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Agriculture and Environmental Affairs from 2006 to 2009 and before that as Chief Whip in the legislature from 2004 to 2006.

Hlengiwe Christophina Mgabadeli is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2004 to 2014. During her second term in the assembly, from 2009 to 2014, she represented the KwaZulu-Natal constituency and chaired Parliament's Joint Standing Committee on Defence.

Ndawoyakhe Wilson Ngcobo is a South African politician who served in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature from 1999 to 2006 and from 2009 to 2014. In the interim, he served briefly in the National Assembly from 2006 to 2009. He was a member of the Democratic Party (DP), later the Democratic Alliance (DA), until September 2005, when he crossed the floor to join the African National Congress (ANC). In 2015, he left the ANC to establish the National Religious Freedom Party, a KwaZulu-Natal-based party of which Ngcobo is president.

Makhosazana Mpho Mdlalose is a South African politician who has served in the National Assembly and KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature, variously representing the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), the National Democratic Convention (Nadeco), and the Democratic Alliance (DA). She is the daughter of Frank Mdlalose, the first Premier of KwaZulu-Natal.
