The Marlborough Region, commonly known simply as Marlborough, is one of the regions of New Zealand, located in the northeast of the South Island. Marlborough is a unitary authority, both a region and a district, and its council is located at Blenheim. It has a population of 46,600.
Havelock is a coastal township in the Marlborough region of New Zealand. It sits at the head of Pelorus Sound, one of the Marlborough Sounds, and at the mouth of the Pelorus and Kaituna Rivers. The 2013 census recorded its population as 486, a decrease of 3 since 2006.
Pelorus Sound / Te Hoiere is the largest of the sounds which make up the Marlborough Sounds at the north of the South Island, New Zealand. The Marlborough Sounds is a system of drowned river valleys, which were formed after the last ice age around 10,000 years ago. Pelorus Sound has a main channel which winds south from Cook Strait for about 55 kilometres (34 mi), between steeply sloped wooded hills, until it reached its head close to Havelock town. Pelorus has several major arms, notably Tennyson Inlet, Tawhitinui Reach, Kenepuru Sound and the Crail/Clova/Beatrix Bay complex. Its shoreline runs for 380 kilometres (240 mi).
The Wairau River is one of the longest rivers in New Zealand's South Island. It flows for 170 kilometres (110 mi) from the Spenser Mountains, firstly in a northwards direction and then northeast down a long, straight valley in inland Marlborough.
Tawero Point marks the eastern limit of the Wilson Bay Farm and the southern approach to Tawhitinui Reach in Pelorus Sound, part of the Marlborough Sounds Maritime Park at the top of the South Island of New Zealand. Located at the end of a distinctive land feature easily recognisable on a chart or from the air, Tawero Point is home to a number of hardy Romney Marsh sheep which graze its steep and at times windswept slopes. The point is identified at night by maritime navigation lights on either side of the headland. All vessels leaving the inner sound for the open sea must round Tawero Point.
Penzance Bay is a popular bay located in Tennyson Inlet, within the Marlborough Sounds. Tennyson Inlet is an arm of Pelorus Sound. The bay is immediately north of Tuna Bay which is accessed by the same road.
Tennyson Inlet, is the western arm of Pelorus Sound in the Marlborough Sounds. Tennyson Inlet encompasses Duncan Bay to Tawhitinui Reach. This area is about 10 kilometres (6 mi) long. Tarakaipa and Tawhitinui Islands are the two largest islands in the inlet. There are three main settlements which are used mostly for recreation.
Maungatapu is a mountain in New Zealand included in both the Nelson, New Zealand and Marlborough Regions. It lies in the Bryant Range. The mountain is 1014 meters high. Maungatapu is a Māori-language word meaning "sacred mountain". The mountain was the location of the infamous Maungatapu murders.
Rai Valley is a locality in Marlborough, New Zealand. State Highway 6 runs through the area. The Rai River runs past the locality to join the Pelorus River at the locality of Pelorus Bridge to the south. Nelson is 48 km to the west. Okiwi Bay is 22 km to the northeast. Canvastown is 17 km to the southeast.
The Collins River, New Zealand is a river of eastern Nelson, New Zealand. As a tributary of the Whangamoa River, it rises north of the Rai Saddle and flows north-westward to join that river at Whangamoa.
The Opouri River is a river of the Marlborough Region of New Zealand's South Island. It flows generally west from its sources in the Bull Range, a coastal ridge overlooking the Marlborough Sounds, joining with the Rai River 15 kilometres (9 mi) west of Havelock.
The Ronga River is a river of the Marlborough Region of New Zealand's South Island. Although its source is on a ridge only 3 kilometres (2 mi) from the island's north coast, the river flows south, reaching the Rai River close to the township of Rai Valley.
The Tinline River is a river of the Marlborough Region of New Zealand's South Island. It flows generally south from its sources at the northern end of the Bryant Range to reach the Pelorus River seven kilometres west of Pelorus Bridge.
The Tunakino River is a river of the Marlborough Region of New Zealand's South Island. It flows south from its origins in a coastal rim of hills at the base of the Marlborough Sounds to reach the Opouri River 5 kilometres (3 mi) east of Rai Valley
The Wakamarina River is a river of the Marlborough Region of New Zealand's South Island. It flows generally northeast from its origins in the Richmond Range to reach the Pelorus River at the settlement of Canvastown, 10 kilometres (6 mi) west of Havelock. In 1864, gold was found in the river near Havelock, and soon 6,000 men were working in the area. The gold rush did not last long and most miners moved on to the West Coast Gold Rush.
The Rainy River is a short river of the northeastern Tasman Region of New Zealand's South Island. It flows north from the Richmond Range into the Pelorus River, which it reaches five kilometres west of Pelorus Bridge.
Pelorus Bridge is a tiny locality in Marlborough, New Zealand where the Rai River meets Pelorus River. State Highway 6 crosses the Pelorus River at Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve, which was used as one of the film locations for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. You can take a guided kayak tour to experience this Hobbit filming location.
Elaine Bay is a bay located in Pelorus Sound, within the Marlborough Sounds at the north end of the South Island of New Zealand. Elaine Bay is in the Tawhitinui Reach, which includes other bays such as Tennyson Inlet, Fitzroy Bay and Hallum Cove. The bay is accessed by the Elaine Bay Road, which connects with the Croisilles-French Pass Road at the top of the ridge.
The Bryant Range is a range of low mountains in the northern South Island of New Zealand. They form part of the boundary of the Nelson and Tasman Districts with Marlborough Region, as well as forming the western boundary of Mount Richmond Forest Park The range is traversed by State Highway 6 at the Rai Saddle close to its northern end.
