Rajamohan.R (born in december 3) is an Indian film director, screen writer, lyricist, poet, dialogue writer who works in Tamil cinema. He is best known for his directorial debut film Kunguma Poovum Konjum Puraavum (2009). [1] Other films he has directed include Vanavarayan Vallavarayan (2014), [2] Father (2025) [3] and Address (2025). [4]
Rajamohan was born in Nagercoil,Tamil Nadu. In 1999, his family suffered a major loss when his elder brother, who had dreamed of becoming a film director passed away. Determined to honour that dream, Rajamohan moved to Chennai along with his younger brother. His goal was to earn money through any available work and support his younger brother’s education in Digital Film Technology (DFT), believing that his sibling would one day fulfil the aspiration their elder brother could not. At this stage, Rajamohan himself had no personal ambition to enter filmmaking.
Before arriving in Chennai, he wished to pursue a B.Ed degree at Saidapet College but was unable to do so due to financial constraints. In Chennai, he briefly worked at a paper shop, but after a conflict at the workplace, he quit within three days. Worried about supporting his family in Nagercoil, he began searching for ways to earn money. He recalled that in his childhood he used to write poems and send them to All India Radio, where many of his works were broadcast on the programme "Ilaiya Bharatham". Inspired by this, he decided to continue writing and submit poems to the All India Radio Chennai branch.
During this time, while waiting for a bus to go to the All India Radio office, he met a person Jothi, a familiar face from his lodging. After learning about Rajamohan’s plan, Jothi joined him, and the two began visiting All India Radio regularly. One day, when the programme executive was absent and they were unable to submit their poems, they wandered near the Sun TV office. Encouraged by Jothi, they attempted to seek opportunities as lyricists but were denied entry by security. Still determined, they decided to visit the nearby office of Super Good Films.
When the security asked whom they wished to meet, Rajamohan noticed a poster of Nee Varuvai Ena and mentioned the name of its director, Rajakumaran. Since the film had been shot in Nagercoil, Rajamohan’s hometown, the security guard allowed him inside. At the AVM Studios dubbing theatre, Rajamohan waited to meet Rajakumaran, who eventually advised him to return after the film’s release. The brief encounter gave Rajamohan a renewed sense of hope.
Motivated to prove his abilities to Rajakumaran, Rajamohan returned home that night and wrote nearly one hundred caption ideas for Nee Varuvai Ena. He shortlisted twenty-five and compiled them into a small booklet, which he delivered to Rajakumaran’s office the next day. After receiving no response for several days, he continued visiting the office, though Rajakumaran remained busy with post-production work. On one occasion, a co-director scolded him for appearing daily, leaving Rajamohan discouraged and ready to abandon his pursuit in cinema.
As he stepped out of the office intending to search for a regular job, the manager of Super Good Films approached him, explaining that Rajakumaran had been looking for him and was impressed by his caption work. The manager arranged a meeting, during which Rajakumaran assigned Rajamohan to write captions for the film’s audio launch. Impressed by his creativity and dedication, Rajakumaran offered him a position as assistant director on his next film, Vinnukum Mannukum . Rajamohan contributed to dialogue writing and script development during the project.
While working on the film, he formed a strong friendship with cinematographer Vijay Milton, whose poetry book Kolusugal Pesakoodum and cinematographic style deeply impressed him. Their bond grew further during Kadhaludan, where Milton served as cinematographer. Over time, both Rajamohan and Vijay Milton aspired to become directors. Milton encouraged Rajamohan to gain more experience by working under director A. Venkatesh in the film Aai , which helped him refine his skills. Shortly afterwards, Rajamohan married his longtime partner.
Known for his clarity in storytelling and his ability to enhance scripts, Rajamohan became well-regarded for film discussions and story development. When Vijay Milton made his directorial debut with Azhagai Irukkirai Bayamai Irukkirathu , Rajamohan played a key role in shaping the script.. Following this experience, Rajamohan secured a producer for his own directorial debut, Kunguma Poovum Konjum Puravum , marking the beginning of his journey as a filmmaker.
