Ramesh Surajmal Garg (born:18 June 1948),also known as R. S. Garg,is a retired Indian judge and a former Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court.
Justice Garg was born in 1948. He passed master's degree in economics and law. He started practice in Madhya Pradesh High Court on Civil,Criminal,Revenue,Constitutional and Taxation matters. [1] He was appointed as Additional Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on 15 December 1994 and was made permanent on 19 July 1995.
He became the first acting Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh High Court upon it's creation in 2000 and remained so till the appointment of first permanent chief justice W. A. Shishak. [2] He also served as a judge of Patna High Court and Gujarat High Court. Justice Garg was repatriated to Madhya Pradesh High Court in 2007 and was appointed Acting Chief Justice on 16 November 2009 consequent upon the elevation of the then chief justice Ananga Kumar Patnaik to Supreme Court of India. He was elevated to the post of Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court on 17 April 2010 and served brief period of 2 months at the helm before reaching age of superannuation. [3]
He came again in the news in August 2025 because of robbery in his Indore house despite presence of security personnel. [4] [5]
