Ranee Jayamaha also spelt as Rani Jayamaha (born 27 May 1949) is a Sri Lankan economist, author and banker. She served as the chairperson of Hatton National Bank from 2011 to 2015. [1] [2] In addition, she is currently an advisor to the President of Sri Lanka in Banking [3] and a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (2004–2009). [4] She has also served as a member of the Insurance Board of Sri Lanka and a member of Securities and Exchange Commission. [5]

Career

Jayamaha was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka and received a BA in Banking from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka in 1970, a Masters in Economics from the University of Stirling, UK in 1976 and a PhD in Monetary Economics from the University of Bradford, UK in 1989. [6] [7] [8] She joined the Central Bank of Sri Lanka upon graduation and rose to the rank of Deputy Governor in 2004. [9] She retired from the Central Bank in May 2009 and was subsequently appointed chairperson of the Hatton National Bank, [10] one of the largest private banks in Sri Lanka. [11]

In November 2012, the University of Stirling recognized Jayamaha with the degree of Doctor of the University (DUniv) [12] [13] in recognition of her career as one of the University's first masters graduates in economics and as a person of distinction in the fields of Economics, Banking and Public Affairs. She became the honorary fellow of the Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka during the 13th annual convocation of the institute on 24 October 2008. [14] [15]

From 2004 until her retirement in 2009, Jayamaha was deputy governor in charge of financial system stability [16] of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. She has over 45 years of experience in the fields of economics, banking, finance, payment systems, regulation and administration, [17] [18] having held a number of positions at the Central Bank and other international institutions. Jayamaha has recently published a book, [23] The Money Pipeline, [24] which focuses on national payment systems with an emphasis on payment systems in Asia, particularly Sri Lanka.

She was appointed as one of the non executive directors of the HNB Bank with effect from 31 March 2011. [25] She announced that she would resign as chairperson of HNB on 27 March 2015 and tendered her resignation at the bank's annual general meeting on 30 March 2015. [26] [27] During her tenure as HNB chairperson, the bank recorded huge profits and gained popularity as a systematically important bank in the financial system. [28]

She was appointed as the chairman of HNB Assurance with effect from 29 June 2012. [29]

On 24 June 2020, she was appointed as one of the non executive board members of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. [30] [31] [32]

Lakshman Arjuna Mahendran is a Sri Lankan-born Singaporean economist and banker. He is a former Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), having been appointed by President Maithripala Sirisena in January 2015 and served until the end of his term on 30 June 2016. He was the former Managing Director of HSBC Private Bank, Chief Investment Officer of Emirates NBD as well as chairman and Director-General of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka. Mahendran is currently residing in Singapore, which has refused to extradite him on a request from Sri Lanka routed through interpol.

Jayanthi Kuru-Utumpala is a Sri Lankan women’s rights activist with 20 years of experience and a rock climber / mountaineer for nearly as long. She has worked at national, regional, and global levels as a technical advisor, advocate, trainer, researcher, and programme manager on issues relating to gender, gender-based violence, sexuality, masculinities, women’s human rights, and more recently, women in sports. In 2016, she became the first Sri Lankan to summit Mount Everest. In recognition of this achievement, from 2016-2019 she was appointed the Goodwill Ambassador for Women's Rights by the Sri Lankan Ministry of Women's Affairs. In 2017, she was also included in the BBC’s list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world. In 2023, she was the recipient of the International Olympic Committee’s Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Champions Award for Asia(Olympic Council of Asia). Since returning from Everest, she has delivered over 500 motivational speeches, to schools, universities, clubs, professional sports teams, corporate entities, government, and non-governmental organizations, as well as the military and police. She is currently the Gender and Human Rights Advisor at the Family Planning Association in Sri Lanka, working to address stigma and discrimination faced by people seeking HIV services, and is a co-creator of ‘Delete Nothing’ – a local web-based initiative aimed at addressing online gender-based violence in Sri Lanka. Jayanthi serves on several boards and is the current Chairperson of the Women and Media Collective and the International Centre for Ethnic Studies. Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka, also abbreviated as IBSL, is a professional apex body of the banking education in Sri Lanka. It is one of the prominent institutes which carryout banking courses for the students and it is closely associated with Central Bank of Sri Lanka. The institute was formally established as Bankers' Training Institute in 1964 by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. Bankers' Training Institute was reincorporated in 1979 as Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka under the provisions of Parliament Act no 26 of 1979.

Edirisinghe Trust Investments Finance Limited also popularly known as ETI Finance is a Sri Lankan private limited company as well as a non banking financial institution which worked as a licensed finance company accepting deposits from general public. The company's business was primarily based on lending money on gold securities. On 13 July 2020, Central Bank of Sri Lanka decided to cancel the license of the company due to insufficient capital and financial problems regarding repaying depositors' money on demand as well as before maturity.

Abeykoon Mudiyansalage Yupun Priyadarshana, known as Yupun Abeykoon, also referred to as Yupun Priyadarshana, is a Sri Lankan track and field athlete and a national record holder in men's 100m, men's 200m and in men's indoor 60m. On 3 July 2022, he became the first South Asian to break the 10-Second barrier for the men's 100 meters event at the Resisprint International competition, with a timing of 9.96 seconds, in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. He currently resides in Italy as he went on a scholarship to Italy in 2015. He is also attached to the Electronic and Mechanical Engineering Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army and represents Army Sports Club. He is currently regarded as the fastest Sri Lankan man as well as fastest South Asian man in men's 100m and 200m disciplines.

Sanjay Rajaratnam, PC is a Sri Lankan lawyer. He is the current Attorney General of Sri Lanka. He previously served as the Acting Solicitor General of Sri Lanka from October 2019 up until May 2021.

Darshika Abeywickrama also spelt as either Dharshika Abeywickrama or Darshika Abeywickrema is a Sri Lankan netball player who plays in the positions of goal defense or goalkeeper. She is nicknamed "Bale".

P. Nandalal Weerasinghe is a Sri Lankan economist and banker who is also currently serving as the 17th Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. A career officer in the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, serving as its chief economist and senior deputy governor. He has also served as an alternative executive director at the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC representing the countries such as Sri Lanka, Bhutan, India and Bangladesh from January 2010 to August 2012. He has also previously acted as a chairman of the monetary policy committee and foreign reserve management committee of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

Darshan Ravindra Abeysuriya also popularly known as Ravi Abeysuriya was a Sri Lankan accountant, educator and financial analyst. He was regarded as one of the topmost finance sector professionals in Sri Lanka. He was also considered as officially the first Chartered Financial Analyst charter holder in Sri Lanka. He also served as the President of the Colombo Stock Brokers Association for a brief stint.
