Rape in Taiwan

Rape in Taiwan is sexual assault involving sexual penetration carried out against a person without their consent in the nation. Victims and perpetrators include Taiwan citizens, residents, and foreign nationals from a wide range of backgrounds and every social class. [1] [2] [3]

Victims, some who are lured into sex trafficking in Taiwan, are raped in hotels and other locations throughout the country. [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] There have been women deceived by perpetrators in fake modeling photoshoots. [9] [10] Some are victims of drugging, [11] [12] gang rape, torture, murder, [13] and sexual slavery. Victims suffer from physical and psychological trauma, ostracization, and, at times, suicide. [14] Rapes and attempted rapes have been committed by students, [15] teachers, [16] artists, [17] spa and massage workers, [18] medical staff, Taiwan military personnel, [19] [20] and others.

History

Rape was committed by Imperial Japanese Armed Forces personnel in Taiwan during the Asia–Pacific War. Comfort women from Taiwan were sex trafficked and sexually assaulted. [21]

Rapes in the country in the 20th and 21st centuries include, but are not limited to, the rape and murder of Pai Hsiao-yen, [22] the rape of Lin Yi-han, [23] Justin Lee sex scandal, [24] and crimes of Chang Tso-chi, [25] Chen Jui-chin, [26] Jung Myung-seok, [27] [28] and Sakuliu Pavavaljung. [29]

In 1996, Taiwanese airman Chiang Kuo-ching was tortured into making a false confession rape and murder of a five-year-old girl and was executed in 1997. [30]

Capital punishment is a legal penalty in Taiwan. The list of capital offences, for which the death penalty can be imposed includes murder, treason, drug trafficking, piracy, terrorism, and especially serious cases of robbery, rape, and kidnapping, as well as military offences, such as desertion during war time. In practice, however, all executions in Taiwan since the early 2000s have been for murder.

The Rochdale child sex abuse ring involved underage teenage girls in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England. Nine men were convicted of sex trafficking and other offences including rape, trafficking girls for sex and conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with a child in May 2012. This resulted in Greater Manchester Police launching Operation Doublet and other operations to investigate further claims of abuse. As of January 2024 a total of 42 men had been convicted resulting in jail sentences totalling 432 years. Forty-seven girls were identified as victims of child sexual exploitation during the initial police investigation. The men were British Pakistanis, which led to discussion on whether the failure to investigate them was linked to the authorities' fear of being accused of racial prejudice. The girls were mainly White British.

Rape is the fourth most common crime against women in India. According to the 2021 annual report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 31,677 rape cases were registered across the country, or an average of 86 cases daily, a rise from 2020 with 28,046 cases, while in 2019, 32,033 cases were registered. Of the total 31,677 rape cases, 28,147 of the rapes were committed by persons known to the victim. The share of victims who were minors or below 18 – the legal age of consent – stood at 10%.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Rotherham child sexual exploitation scandal</span> Sexual abuse scandal in England

The Rotherham child sexual exploitation scandal refers to the organised child sexual abuse that occurred in the town of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, Northern England, from the late 1980s until 2013. An estimated 1,400 girls, commonly from care home backgrounds, were abused by "grooming gangs" of predominantly British-Pakistani men between 1997 and 2013. Researcher Angie Heal, who was hired by local officials and warned them about child exploitation occurring between 2002 and 2007, has since described it as the "biggest child protection scandal in UK history".

The Justin Lee rape scandal involves a Taiwanese man, Justin Lee, who was convicted of nine rapes, during which he had drugged women and then recorded the sexual assaults.

In 2007, the U.S. Department of State reported 31,833 rapes in the People's Republic of China (PRC), but no similar report by the PRC government has been made available. Same-sex sexual assault between male adults was made illegal in late 2015. Domestic and foreign victims of sex trafficking in China are raped.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Peter Scully</span> Australian child sex offender, rapist, and murderer

Peter Gerard Scully is an Australian convicted murderer and child sex offender who is imprisoned for life in the Philippines after being convicted of one count of human trafficking and five counts of rape by sexual assault of children. Scully was sentenced to life imprisonment in June 2018. In November 2022, he received a second conviction and was sentenced to an additional 129 years in prison.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Chang Tso-chi</span> Taiwanese film director

Chang Tso-chi is a Taiwanese film director. His 2002 film The Best Of Times was entered into the 59th Venice International Film Festival. His films won Golden Horse Award for Best Feature Film two times, for The Best of Times (2002) and When Love Comes (2010).

Crime in Taiwan ranges from food adulteration, bombing, assassination attempts, hostage crisis, murder etc. However, crime statistics show that crime rates in Taiwan are among the lowest in the world, and are relatively low compared to much of the developed world. A 2020 report named Taiwan the second-safest country in the world, based on low crime rates and a high number of survey respondents who indicated that they felt safe walking alone at night.

People v. Turner, formally The People of the State of California v. Brock Allen Turner (2015), was a criminal case in which Brock Allen Turner was convicted by jury trial of three counts of felony sexual assault.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Jung Myung-seok</span> South Korean clergy (born 1945)

Jung Myung-seok is a South Korean clergy who founded and lead the Providence religious movement, also known as Christian Gospel Mission (CGM) or Jesus Morning Star (JMS), a Christian new religious movement that is commonly referred to as a Christian sect or cult. Jung was convicted of rape by the Supreme Court of Korea and was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment between 2008 and 2018. He was again indicted in South Korea on 28 October 2022, for sexually assaulting two female followers between 2018 and 2022.

The Vanderbilt rape case is a criminal case of sexual assault that occurred on June 23, 2013, in Nashville, Tennessee, in which four Vanderbilt University football players carried an unconscious 21-year-old female student into a dorm room, gang-raped and sodomized her, photographed and videotaped her, and one urinated on her face.

Hurtcore, a portmanteau of the words "hardcore" and "hurt", is a name given to a particularly extreme form of child pornography, usually involving degrading violence, bodily harm, and torture, typically relating to child sexual abuse. Eileen Ormsby, Australian writer and author of The Darkest Web, described hurtcore as "a fetish for people who get aroused by the infliction of pain, or even torture, on another person who is not a willing participant". An additional motivation for the perpetrator, next to their position of power over their victims, can be the reaction of their victims to the physical abuse, like crying or screaming of pain. This reaction can stimulate the arousal of the perpetrator even more.

Sex trafficking in Taiwan is human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation and slavery that occurs in the Taiwan, which is a country of origin, destination, and transit for sexually trafficked persons.

Cybersex trafficking, live streaming sexual abuse, webcam sex tourism/abuse or ICTs -facilitated sexual exploitation is a cybercrime involving sex trafficking and the live streaming of coerced sexual acts and/or rape on webcam.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tsai Hau</span> Taiwanese politician (born 1958)

Tsai Hau is a Taiwanese politician. He served three terms on the Legislative Yuan from 1999 to 2008. Originally elected as a political independent, Tsai joined the Non-Partisan Solidarity Union in 2004, and represented the Kuomintang in the 2009 Taiwanese local elections. From 2018 to 2019, Tsai was vice chairman of the Congress Party Alliance.

Sakuliu Pavavaljung is a Taiwanese Paiwan artist.
