Raphael Chikukwa

Raphael Chikukwa (born 1970) is a Zimbabwean curator and the Executive Director of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe since 2020. [1] Prior to this, he was Chief Curator at the same institution and before that he has worked for a decade as an independent curator. [2] [3] [4] Chikukwa is a Chevening Scholar who holds an MA in Curating Contemporary Design from Kingston University London.

Early life and education

Chikukwa was trained at the Harare Art Centre in Mbare. [5]

Career

Chikukwa volunteered at the second Johannesburg Biennale in 1997 working under Okwui Enwezor. He then spent the next decade working as an independent curator. Chikukwa studied and trained in Europe before he was appointed Curator of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. While there he was the founding curator of the Zimbabwean Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011, and he organized the country's representation in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2022. [6]

Chikukwa was appointed Executive Director of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in 2020. [7] In 2021, he was a member of the visual arts jury for the annual DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program. [8]

The Gallery was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother on July 16, 1957, and Queen Elizabeth II attended the sixth Zimbabwe Heritage Exhibition there in October 1991.

In 2015, he was also one of three artists, along with Chikonzero Chazunguza and Gareth Nyandoro, selected for Pixels Of Ubuntu/Unhu for the Zimbabwean Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale. He is an honorary research fellow at Rhodes University Fine Arts Department in Grahamstown, South Africa.

Alexie Glass-Kantor is an Australian curator. Since 2013, she has held the position of Executive Director of Artspace Visual Arts Centre in Sydney.

Rele Gallery is the first African contemporary art gallery to establish an outpost in Los Angeles. Sonariwo was the lead curator of the first Nigerian pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017. He was one of the founders of the Catholic University of Zimbabwe, which was established in 1999.

Chikonzero (Chiko) Chazunguza is a Zimbabwean artist, activist and educator.

Gerald Machona is a Zimbabwean contemporary visual artist. The most recognizable aspect of his work is his use of decommissioned Zimbabwean dollars. Machona works in sculpture, performance, new media, photography and film. In Machona's work, he explores issues of migration, transnationality, social interaction and xenophobia in South Africa.
