Raphael Chikukwa (born 1970) is a Zimbabwean curator and the Executive Director of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe since 2020. [1] Prior to this, he was Chief Curator at the same institution and before that he has worked for a decade as an independent curator. [2] [3] [4] Chikukwa is a Chevening Scholar who holds an MA in Curating Contemporary Design from Kingston University London.

Early life and education

Chikukwa was trained at the Harare Art Centre in Mbare. [5]

Career

Chikukwa volunteered at the second Johannesburg Biennale in 1997 working under Okwui Enwezor. He then spent the next decade working as an independent curator. Chikukwa studied and trained in Europe before he was appointed Curator of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. While there he was the founding curator of the Zimbabwean Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011, and he organized the country's representation in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2022. [6]

Chikukwa was appointed Executive Director of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in 2020. [7] In 2021, he was a member of the visual arts jury for the annual DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program. [8]

The National Gallery of Zimbabwe (NGZ) is a gallery in Harare, Zimbabwe, dedicated to the presentation and conservation of Zimbabwe's contemporary art and visual heritage. The original National Gallery of Rhodesia was designed and directed by Frank McEwen, a British citizen credited with bringing Shona Sculpture to the spotlight. The Gallery was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother on July 16, 1957, and Queen Elizabeth II attended the sixth Zimbabwe Heritage Exhibition there in October 1991.

Masimba Hwati is an interdisciplinary artist from Zimbabwe, working internationally at the intersections of sculpture, performance, and sound, known for his unconventional three-dimensional mixed media sculptures. Hwati graduated from Harare Polytechnic School of Art and Design in 2003 where he majored in Ceramics and Painting. Hwati taught Visual Arts and 3D Art at Harare Polytechnic School of Art and Design. He is a PhD Candidate at Akademie Der Bildenden Künste Wien ,Österreich,an MFA from Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design University of Michigan, Ann Arbor He was most recently, included in the Montreal Museum of Fine Art's (MMFA) exhibition, Face To Face: From Yesterday to Today, Non-Western Art and Picasso. In 2015, he was also one of three artists, along with Chikonzero Chazunguza and Gareth Nyandoro, selected for Pixels Of Ubuntu/Unhu for the Zimbabwean Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale. He is an honorary research fellow at Rhodes University Fine Arts Department in Grahamstown, South Africa.

Alexie Glass-Kantor is an Australian curator. Since 2013, she has held the position of Executive Director of Artspace Visual Arts Centre in Sydney.

She is the founder of the Rele Art Gallery on Military Street, Onikan, Lagos Island, Lagos, Nigeria as well as the Rele Art Gallery on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, California. Rele Gallery is the first African contemporary art gallery to establish an outpost in Los Angeles. Sonariwo was the lead curator of the first Nigerian pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017. Alongside the Rele Art Gallery, Sonariwo is also the founding director of the Rele Arts Foundation. He has been Visiting Professor of Modern African Literature at a number of American universities. After his stint as a diplomat, Professor Kahari was the first black director at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. He was one of the founders of the Catholic University of Zimbabwe, which was established in 1999.

Chikonzero (Chiko) Chazunguza is a Zimbabwean artist, activist and educator.

Gerald Machona is a Zimbabwean contemporary visual artist. The most recognizable aspect of his work is his use of decommissioned Zimbabwean dollars. Machona works in sculpture, performance, new media, photography and film. In Machona's work, he explores issues of migration, transnationality, social interaction and xenophobia in South Africa.
