Ratho is a dispersed rural community located in the township of Blandford-Blenheim in Oxford County in southwestern Ontario. Located in old Blandford Township, at its centre are the Ratho Presbyterian Cemetery, a church and an old general store.

History

The hamlet was named by its original settlers for Ratho, a village in the Rural West Edinburgh area of Edinburgh, Scotland.

Ratho is a village in the Rural West Edinburgh area of Edinburgh, Scotland. Its population at the 2011 census was 1,634 based on the 2010 definition of the locality. It was formerly in the old county of Midlothian. Ratho Station, Newbridge and Kirkliston are other villages in the area. The Union Canal passes through Ratho. Edinburgh Airport is situated only 4 miles (7 km) away. The village has a high ratio of its older houses built from whin stone due to a whin quarry nearby. The older, historical, part of the village was designated a Conservation Area in 1971 by Midlothian County Council.

HM Prison Edinburgh

Her Majesty's Prison Edinburgh is located in the west of Edinburgh on the main A71, in an area now known as Stenhouse, and, although never named as such, has been popularly known as Saughton Prison from the old name for the general area. The prison is situated on the edge of a predominantly residential area and has good transport and road links to the city centre, which provides good access both for local courts and prison visitors. The building of the prison started on 31 July 1914 with the first prisoner being received in 1919. The prison consists of four halls; Glenesk, Hermiston, Ingliston and Ratho.
