Ravi Shankar Kailas is an Indian entrepreneur. He is chairman of Mytrah Group, a business group in India consisting of Mytrah Energy, an independent renewable energy-producing company, and Mytrah Mobility, an electric vehicle ecosystem company.
In 1999, Kailas founded Zip Global Network, an independent payphone service provider. The firm designed and manufactured payphones that were assembled with computer components, and installed in major urban areas. [1] In 2002, Kailas co-founded Xius Technologies, a telecommunications software company, and launched the world's first inter-operator prepaid roaming service. [2] The same year, Kailas founded Altius Investment Trust, [1] a real estate financial options company.
In 2009, Kailas founded the Mytrah Group. Mytrah Energy, the Group's first venture, owns and operates a renewable energy portfolio of wind and solar assets in seven states in India. [3] Since 2016, the Group has diversified into electric vehicles and deep tech. [4]
Kailas advocates for “open” philanthropy, where multiple sectors of society pool resources to tackle development challenges at scale. The Myth of the Entrepreneur, a book about this subject, authored by Kailas in collaboration with Cathy Guo, is to be published by HarperCollins in April 2019. [5] [6]
India is the third largest producer of electricity in the world. During the fiscal year (FY) 2023–24, the total electricity generation in the country was 1,949 TWh, of which 1,734 TWh was generated by utilities.
Rural electrification is the process of bringing electrical power to rural and remote areas. Rural communities are suffering from colossal market failures as the national grids fall short of their demand for electricity. As of 2019, 770 million people live without access to electricity – 10.2% of the global population. Electrification typically begins in cities and towns and gradually extends to rural areas, however, this process often runs into obstacles in developing nations. Expanding the national grid is expensive and countries consistently lack the capital to grow their current infrastructure. Additionally, amortizing capital costs to reduce the unit cost of each hook-up is harder to do in lightly populated areas. If countries are able to overcome these obstacles and reach nationwide electrification, rural communities will be able to reap considerable amounts of economic and social development.

Its original technology generated electricity using a biomass gasifier that created fuel from rice husks, a waste product of rice hullers that separate the husks as chaff from the rice, a staple food in both Asia and Africa. In the mid-2010s, with the rapid decline in the price of solar PV and batteries, Husk pivoted its business model to focus more on solar-plus-storage mini-grids, while continuing to use biomass in combination with solar to serve communities with larger electricity demand. In 2021, Husk Power was recognized in the REN21 Renewables Global Status Report as the first mini-grid company to achieve significant scale, by surpassing 100 solar hybrid community mini-grids, and 5,000 small business customers. In 2022, Husk signed an Energy Compact with the United Nations, in which it set a target of building 5,000 mini-grids and connecting at least 1 million customers by 2030.

Also known as the Green Maharaja, the London-born owner of RRB Energy, Rakesh Bakshi, was an Indian climate change activist, professor, and businessman. He is credited as one of the pioneers in the field of renewable energy sources in India and founded Solchrome Private Limited and RRB Energy Limited. He last held the position of Chairman and Managing Director at RRBEL. In 1991, Rakesh Bakshi was awarded Padma Shri, India's 4th highest civilian award, by then-President of India, Shri. R. Venkataraman, in recognition of his commendable contributions to the field of renewable energy sources. He is the first Indian to be honored with this award for working in the field of renewable energy.
