Raymond John Ashcroft is an English actor. He is best known for his roles as DS Geoff Daly in The Bill from 1996 to 2000, and Ronnie Marsden on Emmerdale from March to December 2003.

Career

In the late 1970s Ashcroft was the frontman of The Push, a Sheffield band. [1] He started acting in repertory theatre before working in television and film productions.

He played Ringo Starr in the biopic TV film Birth of the Beatles (1979), [2] and he has also appeared in various television productions including Coronation Street . [3]

Ashcroft played DS Geoff Daly in The Bill from 1996 to 2000 [4] [5] before portraying Ronnie Madsen in Emmerdale (2003). [6]

In 2018, he portrayed Tom Jackson, a Yorkshire miner, in the play On Behalf of The People. [7] [8] [9] [10] [11]

In 2021, he played the lead role of Horace in the short film Mr Wong's Lullaby. [12]

Coronation Street is a British television soap opera created by Granada Television and shown on ITV since 9 December 1960. The Don Beech Scandal was a storyline in the long-running police procedural British television series The Bill. ITV announced the storyline in 2000; a spokeswoman for The Bill was quoted as saying: "The character of DS Beech has had a huge storyline running over a very long time where he is a corrupt copper. When we first discussed this with Billy we made it clear that one day his character would get his comeuppance, and he agreed to that."

The British Soap Awards (BSAs) are an annual awards ceremony in the United Kingdom which honours the best moments in British soap operas. The ceremony is televised on ITV. The trophies given to the winners are made from metal and glass and have been manufactured by British firm Creative Awards since their inception. Paul Marsden is a fictional character from the British soap opera Emmerdale, played by Matthew Booth. The character made his first appearance during the episode broadcast on 10 March 2003. The character was killed off the following year, after an altercation with Carl King. Booth made his final appearance as Paul during the episode broadcast on 6 July 2004.
