Trinidad is the larger and more populous of the two major islands of Trinidad and Tobago. The island lies 11 km (6.8 mi) off the northeastern coast of Venezuela and sits on the continental shelf of South America. It is often referred to as the southernmost island in the West Indies. With an area of 4,768 km2 (1,841 sq mi),it is also the fifth largest in the West Indies.
The People's National Movement (PNM) is the longest-serving and oldest active political party in Trinidad and Tobago. The party has dominated national and local politics for much of Trinidad and Tobago's history,contesting all elections since 1956 serving as the nation's governing party or on four occasions,the main opposition. As a result,it has sometimes been referred to as Trinidad and Tobago's "main political party". There have been four PNM Prime Ministers and multiple ministries. The party espouses the principles of liberalism and generally sits at the centre to centre-left of the political spectrum.
The University of the West Indies (UWI),originally University College of the West Indies,is a public university system established to serve the higher education needs of the residents of 18 English-speaking countries and territories in the Caribbean:Anguilla,Antigua and Barbuda,The Bahamas,Barbados,Belize,Bermuda,British Virgin Islands,Cayman Islands,Dominica,Grenada,Guyana,Jamaica,Montserrat,Saint Kitts and Nevis,Saint Lucia,Saint Vincent and the Grenadines,Trinidad and Tobago,and Turks and Caicos Islands. Each country is either a member of the Commonwealth of Nations or a British Overseas Territory. The aim of the university is to help "unlock the potential for economic and cultural growth" in the West Indies,thus allowing improved regional autonomy. The university was originally instituted as an independent external college of the University of London.
Wendell Adrian Mottley ORTT is a Trinidad and Tobago economist,politician and athlete. Mottley served as Senator and member of the House of Representatives with the Trinidad and Tobago Parliament and was Minister of Finance from 1991 to 1995. He was an Ivy League sprinter,winning two Olympic medals in 1964.
Kamla Persad-Bissessar;born Kamla Susheila Persad,22 April 1952),often referred to by her initials KPB,is a Trinidadian and Tobagonian lawyer,politician and educator who is the Leader of the Opposition of Trinidad and Tobago,political leader of the United National Congress (UNC) political party,and was the prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago from 26 May 2010 until 9 September 2015. She was the country's first female prime minister,attorney general,and Leader of the Opposition,the first woman to chair the Commonwealth of Nations and the first woman of Indian origin to be a prime minister of a country outside of India and the wider subcontinent.
Trinidad and Tobago,officially the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago,is the southernmost island country in the Caribbean. Lutalo Masimba,born Roy Lewis and known professionally as Brother Resistance,was a rhythm poet and musician from Trinidad and Tobago. He died on 13 July 2021,after being diagnosed with cancer.

She was an attorney at law in private practice and was formerly a lecturer at the Hugh Wooding Law School,Trinidad and Tobago,where she held the position of Course Director in Criminal Practice and Procedure. She was assassinated in Port of Spain on May 4,2014.
Keith Christopher Rowley is a Trinidadian and Tobagonian politician serving as the seventh prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago,first elected into office on 9 September 2015 and again following the 2020 general election. He has led the People's National Movement (PNM) since May 2010 and was Leader of the Opposition from 2010 to 2015. He has also served as the Member of the House of Representatives for Diego Martin West since 1991. He is a volcanologist by profession,holding a doctorate in geology,specializing in geochemistry.
Marina Salandy-Brown FRSA,Hon. FRSL,is a Trinidadian journalist,broadcaster and cultural activist. She was formerly an editor and Senior Manager in Radio and News and Current Affairs programmes with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in London,one of the BBC's few top executives from an ethnic minority background. She is the founder and inaugural director of the NGC Bocas Lit Fest,held annually in Trinidad and Tobago since 2011,"the biggest literary festival in the Anglophone Caribbean",and of the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature. She was also co-founder of the Hollick Arvon Caribbean Writers Prize.
Anthony Amos Lucky is a judge of the United Nations International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. As a retired Court of Appeal Judge,Anthony served in the legal system of Trinidad and Tobago as a magistrate for ten years prior to becoming a judge for another 16 years. He is the recipient of the Chaconia Medal (Gold) for his long and meritorious service to Trinidad and Tobago.
Roodal Moonilal was the Minister of Housing and Urban Development of Trinidad and Tobago and the Leader of Government Business in the House of Representatives from 2010 to 2015.
Faris Al-Rawi is a Trinidadian and Tobagonian politician. He was the former Attorney General of Trinidad and Tobago from 2015 to 2022. He is also a Member of the House of Representatives for the constituency of San Fernando West.

She has served as founder,chair,adviser,or member of several organizations,such as the Caribbean Association for Feminist Research and Action (CAFRA),the Global Fund for Women,and the Regional Advisory Committee of the Global Poosay Coalition on Women and AIDS established by UNAIDS. In 2002 she received the Seventh CARICOM Triennial Award for Women,was Trinidad and Tobago's nominee for the International Women of Courage Award in 2008,and was honoured in her country's National Honour Awards ceremony in 2012 with the Gold Medal for the Development of Women.
Senator Dr Dhanayshar Mahabir is an economist and served as an Independent Senator in the Trinidad and Tobago Senate from 2013 to 2018.
University of the West Indies at Cave Hill is a public research university in Cave Hill,Barbados. It is one of five general campuses in the University of the West Indies system.
Joan L. Latchman is a seismologist from Trinidad and Tobago who was the first woman to lead the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre. She was awarded the 2019 Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency Council Award.
Christine Carla Kangaloo is a Trinidadian politician,who is the president of Trinidad and Tobago since 2023. She was president of the Senate of Trinidad and Tobago from 2015 until her resignation to run for president in 2023. She is the only person to serve as both President and Vice President of the Senate of Trinidad and Tobago,the first woman to serve as Senate Vice President and third woman to serve as acting President of Trinidad and Tobago and Senate President. She became the second woman to serve as President of Trinidad and Tobago upon her assumption of office on 20 March 2023. Kangaloo has served as an Opposition Senator,Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister,Minister of Legal Affairs and Minister of Science,Technology and Tertiary Education in previous People's National Movement governments.
Jo-Anne Nina Sewlal was a Trinidad and Tobago arachnologist. She discovered several new species of spiders in Trinidad and Tobago,and published some of the first surveys of spider populations in many countries of the Caribbean.
