Realp DFB (Canton of Uri)

Realp DFB railway station (German : Bahnhof Realp DFB) is a railway station in the municipality of Realp, in the Swiss canton of Uri. It is the eastern terminus of the Furka Steam Railway, a heritage railway that operates over the Furka Pass route. Regular service through the Furka Base Tunnel uses Realp railway station, roughly 400 metres (1,300 ft) to the north.

History

Following the opening of the Furka Base Tunnel in 1982, the original FO line over the Furka Pass between Realp and Oberwald was abandoned. However, that line has been progressively reopened since 1992, as a heritage railway operated by the DFB.

The first portion to be reopened was the section between Realp and Tiefenbach, which has been operational once again since 11 July 1992, with its Realp terminus being at Realp DFB. On 30 July 1993, the DFB was extended from its then temporary terminus at Tiefenbach to Furka. It has since been further extended, through the Furka Summit Tunnel and Muttbach-Belvédère to Gletsch.

At a ceremony to be held on 12 August 2010, the rest of the superseded ex-FO line will return to operation, following the completion of another DFB extension, this time from Gletsch to Oberwald. [1] The formal reopening of that portion of the line followed the driving of a gold spike at a ceremony on June 18th 2010 to mark its physical reconnection. [2]

Scheduled DFB services between Gletsch and Oberwald will then commence on 13 August 2010. [3] From that point onwards, there will once again be a train service from Realp all the way over the Furka Pass to Oberwald and return.

Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn Swiss railway company

The Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn is a narrow gauge railway line and a railway company in Switzerland. The track width is 1,000 mm. It was created in 2003 through an amalgamation of Furka Oberalp Bahn (FO) and BVZ Zermatt-Bahn (BVZ). The name comes from the Matterhorn and St. Gotthard Pass.

The Glacier Express (GEX) is an "express" train connecting railway stations of the two major mountain resorts of Zermatt and St. Moritz via Andermatt in the central Swiss Alps. The train is not an "express" in the sense of being a high-speed train, but rather, in the sense that it provides a one-seat ride for an 8-hours-long end-to-end 291 km (181 mi) journey, and omits stops made by local trains. The Glacier Express is known as the slowest express train in the world. As St. Moritz and Zermatt are home to two well-known mountains, the Glacier Express is also said to travel from Matterhorn to Piz Bernina.

The Grimsel Pass is a mountain pass in Switzerland, crossing the Bernese Alps at an elevation of 2,164 metres (7,100 ft). The pass connects the Haslital, the upper valley of the river Aare, with the upper valley of the Rhône. In so doing, and as the Aare is a tributary of the Rhine, the pass crosses the continental divide between the North Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.

Furka Base Tunnel railway tunnel

The Furka Base Tunnel is a Swiss railway base tunnel on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn's Furka–Oberalp line, a west-east railway connecting the cantons of Valais and Uri. Its west portal lies east of Oberwald (VS), at 1,390 m (4,560 ft) above sea level and its east portal lies south of Realp (UR), at 1,550 m (5,090 ft). The base tunnel is 15,407 m (50,548 ft) in length, and replaced the previous track that climbed to an apex of 2,160 m (7,090 ft) above sea level, thus allowing year-round service through service on the Furka–Oberalp line. The old line has been reopened by the Furka Heritage Railway for tourist trains which pass the Furka Pass via the 1.8 km (1.1 mi) long Furka Summit Tunnel.

Furka Pass mountain pass

Furka Pass, with an elevation of 2,429 metres (7,969 ft), is a high mountain pass in the Swiss Alps connecting Gletsch, Valais with Realp, Uri. The Furka Oberalp Bahn line through the Furka Tunnel bypasses the pass. The base tunnel opened in 1982 and replaced a tunnel at 2100 m.

The Furka Summit Tunnel is a 1,858 metres (6,096 ft) long railway tunnel in southern Switzerland. It lies at an altitude of 2,160 metres (7,090 ft). The summit tunnel was completed in 1925, and first opened on 3 July 1926. It links the Furka railway station, in Uri, with the Muttbach-Belvédère halting point, in Valais.

Furka Steam Railway railway line in Switzerland

The Furka Steam Railway is a largely volunteer operated heritage railway which operates a partially rack and pinion-operated line across the Furka Pass, between Realp in Uri and Oberwald in Valais. Culminating at 2,160 metres (7,087 ft), above sea level, it is an old mountainous section of the Furka Oberalp Bahn (FO) that was abandoned after the construction of the Furka Tunnel. It has been gradually brought back into service by the Verein Furka-Bergstrecke with the use of only steam locomotives, with the entire line completed in 2010. The Furka Railway is the second highest rail crossing in Europe, after the Bernina Railway. The Uri side of the line also constitutes the highest railway in Central Switzerland.
