Rebecca Corry (born March 23, 1971) is an American actress, writer, comedian and activist who began her career studying at The Second City training center in Chicago.
Corry was born in Kent, Washington, and moved to Chicago, Illinois, at age 19. [1]
In 2006, she was a finalist on the fourth season of NBC's Last Comic Standing . [2] Her half-hour Comedy Central Presents special premiered in 2009. [3] Corry founded the Stand Up for Pits Foundation to work against abuse and discrimination towards pit bulls. In 2014, she organized the One Million Pibble March On Washington, which had an estimated 4,500 attendees, [4] in an effort to end breed-specific legislation and dog fighting. [5]
In 2017, Corry was one of several female comedians who alleged sexual misconduct by comedian Louis C.K. [6] [7] [8]
After graduating, she went on to study writing and acting and performed in plays. After ten years in Chicago she moved to Los Angeles and shortly after arriving she was chosen to perform as a "New Face" at the Montreal Comedy Festival. Rebecca has guest starred on several television shows like The King Of Queens, Two Broke Girls and Will & Grace to name a few and played "Astrid Barker" (Paul Giamatti's secretary) in Big Fat Liar. She was a series regular playing "Leisha" on NBC's One Big Happy, executive-produced by Ellen DeGeneres and she has written on, hosted and developed several shows while headlining comedy clubs and venues for over twenty years. She's has a Comedy Central half hour special, performed on Premium Blend and was a cast member of Last Comic Standing 4. Corry is the Founder and Executive Director of the Stand Up For Pits Foundation [9] [10] [11] which is a national nonprofit dedicated to educating, advocating and saving the lives of pit bull "type" dogs. [12] [13] She has been producing and headlining sold out Stand Up For Pits events/shows nationwide [14] [15] for 14 years and is directing and executive producing her first feature length documentary while working on a new one woman show. American stand-up comedian, actor, writer and filmmaker Louis C.K. began his career performing stand-up while simultaneously making short films. When he was 17, he directed a comedic short film titled Trash Day (1984). His third short film, Ice Cream, won the grand prize at the Aspen Shortsfest in 1993. In the same year, he began writing for Late Night with Conan O'Brien before leaving the next year. His next writing job was on Late Show with David Letterman in 1995, and directed a series of shorts for Howie Mandel's Sunny Skies on television, followed by acting as head writer for The Dana Carvey Show (1997) and a writer on The Chris Rock Show (1997–1999). He voiced a fictional version of himself on four episodes of Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist from 1996 to 2002. Comedy, the creative works with the intention of humor, has been historically dominated by men. The current comedy culture climate remains male-focused and is currently accepting of women comedians. The conversation surrounding gender-aware comedy has included articles and opinions from many male comedians and fans that are rooted in the idea that women aren’t funny, despite protest from successful female comedians and audiences. However, there is a difference between female humor and feminist humor. As a practice, feminist comedy is not solely comedy performed by women, as many women, especially early female comics, “served to reinforce… cultural stereotypes” and patriarchal views about women and gender. While some scholars have argued that this is because feminism may be antithetical to comedy, which is often described as an aggressive, necessarily masculine act in which the performer centers themselves, others have argued that humor's inclination to subvert hierarchies makes it a particularly effective communication platform for feminist comedians. Feminist comedy frequently references and discusses female-gendered issues and topics such as menstruation, rape, gender inequality, beauty norms, and machismo. Along the lines of intersectionality, which suggests that social identities and systems of oppression are interrelated, many feminist comedians also discuss homophobia, racism, and transphobia.
