Rebel is a 2022 drama film written and directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. The film stars Aboubakr Bensaihi, Lubna Azabal, Amir El Arbi, Tara Abboud, and Younes Bouab. It focuses on the portrayal of a Muslim family torn apart over the future of its youngest member.

Contents

The film had its world premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival on 26 May 2022, and was released in France on 31 August 2022, and in Belgium on 5 October 2022, by BAC Films and Wild Bunch. [2] At the 12th Magritte Awards, Rebel received four nominations, including Best Actor and Best Actress for Bensaihi and Azabal, respectively. [3]

Plot

Kamal Wasaki is a young Belgian rapper of Moroccan origin. He decided to go to Raqqa in Syria as a volunteer to help the victims of the war. His family stayed in Molenbeek. Nassim, Kamal's younger brother, is very influenced by his older brother and wants to join him. The youngster is then approached by an Islamic State recruiter. Leïla, Kamal and Nassim's mother, tries to save her young son. Kamal, on the other hand, is caught in the middle of a conflict and has to join an armed group against his will.

Robrecht Heyvaert is a Belgian cinematographer. He is best known for his work on features including Bad Boys for Life, Revenge and Black and TV series like Ms. Marvel and Snowfall. He collaborated with director Robin Pront on The Ardennes (2015), for which he received the Best Cinematography Award at the Ensor Awards. They teamed up again on Zillion in 2022 He also was nominated thrice for the Best Cinematography Award at the Ensor Awards. Heyvaert has collaborated with directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah on 3 Belgian features Gangsta (2018), Black (2015) and Image (2014), before working together on Bad Boys for Life. His TV work includes Snowfall for which he worked on the pilot and the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel.

The Blue Caftan is a 2022 Moroccan Arabic-language drama film directed by Maryam Touzani, and written by Touzani with the collaboration of Nabil Ayouch. It depicts a woman and her closeted gay husband, who run a caftan store in the medina of Salé, Morocco, and hire a young man as an apprentice. The film premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the FIPRESCI Prize in its section.
