Reconciliation theology in Northern Ireland is a contextual process and a divine goal which involves working to create freedom and peace in Northern Ireland. [1] As with reconciliation theology more widely, reconciliation theology in Northern Ireland emphasises the concepts of truth, justice, forgiveness, and repentance. [2] A theology of reconciliation is practically applied by reconciliation communities.
The discourse on reconciliation emerged in Northern Ireland during the 1990s with the beginnings of the peace process after the Troubles. It began with local academics and theologians but was picked up as an idea by politicians, policy makers, and religious leaders, who each understood it in differing ways and emphasised it for different reasons. [3]
In Northern Ireland, reconciliation communities are ecumenical groups, separate from the institutional church, which are committed to active social justice and a practical theology of reconciliation. [4] They were founded before, during and after the Troubles to promote a model of Christian reconciliation and living [5] and offer a guide for a practical national reconciliation. [6] There are similarities and differences between these communities in terms of structure, development, size, location, visions, and aims. [7]
The first and largest of these groups is Corrymeela which was founded in 1965 [8] and works to help people "to live and work well together", [9] by bringing people of different backgrounds, different political and religious beliefs and different identities together. [10]

During the peace process, the term reconciliation was used by politicians who adopted a similar usage to that of the reconciliation communities. [12] The Belfast Agreement (1998) demonstrated a political concern for reconciliation, with the term being used eight times in the agreement. In the Declaration of Support, the participants dedicated themselves to "the achievement of reconciliation" and stated that they would "endeavour to strive in every practical way towards reconciliation and rapprochement within the framework of democratic and agreed arrangements." [13] In a section of the agreement on "Reconciliation and Victims of Violence", the participants pledged their support for the existing reconciliation communities:
The participants recognise and value the work being done by many organisations to develop reconciliation and mutual understanding and respect between and within communities and traditions, in Northern Ireland and between North and South, and they see such work as having a vital role in consolidating peace and political agreement. Accordingly, they pledge their continuing support to such organisations and will positively examine the case for enhanced financial assistance for the work of reconciliation. [13]
The understanding of reconciliation evolved with the peace process. The term was used by the Democratic Unionist Party and Sinn Féin in their negotiations with regard to a desire for political stability and community building. It has since been used to suggest co-existence. [14]
In the Sinn Féin MLA Declan Kearney's "Reconciliation Speech" in 2012, "reconciliation and trust" were proposed as the next stages of the peace process. [15]
The different understandings and uses of the term reconciliation in Northern Ireland have resulted in confusion among the communities. [3] It has been acknowledged that reconciliation and the discourse surrounding it is very fluid and indistinct in Northern Ireland. [16] The political understanding of reconciliation has caused distrust of the term and a "theological backlash" with regard to reconciliation in Northern Ireland. [17]
Cecelia Clegg and Joseph Liechty have identified that the: [18]
concept of reconciliation is criticized from at least two main angles: some politically-oriented critics see reconciliation as a weak-minded, establishmentarian alternative to the real task of justice and structural change, while its conservative religious critics condemn reconciliation as a matter of crying peace where there is no peace.
Interviews with those working in interfaith communities have revealed a disassociation with the term by community workers, and a resentment toward funding bodies who appear to be interested only in projects including the words "reconciliation" and "peace". [19] A leader of Corrymeela, David Stevens, has said that the concept of reconciliation has "seemingly lost its meaning" due to the historic failures to bring the two groups together. [20]
Sinn Féin is an Irish republican and democratic socialist political party active throughout both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Gerard Adams is an Irish republican politician who was the president of Sinn Féin between 13 November 1983 and 10 February 2018, and served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for Louth from 2011 to 2020. From 1983 to 1992 and from 1997 to 2011, he followed the policy of abstentionism as a Member of Parliament (MP) of the British Parliament for the Belfast West constituency.

The Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) is a social-democratic and Irish nationalist political party in Northern Ireland. The SDLP currently has eight members in the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLAs) and two Members of Parliament (MPs) in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom.
Northern Ireland is one of the four countries of the United Kingdom,, situated in the north-east of the island of Ireland. It was created as a separate legal entity on 3 May 1921, under the Government of Ireland Act 1920. The new autonomous Northern Ireland was formed from six of the nine counties of Ulster: four counties with unionist majorities – Antrim, Armagh, Down, and Londonderry – and two counties with slight Irish nationalist majorities – Fermanagh and Tyrone – in the 1918 General Election. The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) is a unionist, loyalist, and national conservative political party in Northern Ireland. It was founded in 1971 during the Troubles by Ian Paisley, who led the party for the next 37 years. Currently led by Jeffrey Donaldson, it is the second largest party in the Northern Ireland Assembly, and is the fifth-largest party in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. The party has been described as right-wing and socially conservative, being anti-abortion and opposing same-sex marriage. The DUP sees itself as defending Britishness and Ulster Protestant culture against Irish nationalism and Irish republicanism; the party is Eurosceptic and supported Brexit. It supports Northern Ireland remaining in the United Kingdom and opposes the unification of Ireland.
The Northern Ireland Assembly, often referred to by the metonym Stormont, is the devolved legislature of Northern Ireland. It has power to legislate in a wide range of areas that are not explicitly reserved to the Parliament of the United Kingdom, and to appoint the Northern Ireland Executive. It sits at Parliament Buildings at Stormont in Belfast.
The Northern Ireland Executive is the devolved government of Northern Ireland, an administrative branch of the legislature – the Northern Ireland Assembly. It is answerable to the assembly and was initially established according to the terms of the Northern Ireland Act 1998, which followed the Good Friday Agreement. The executive is referred to in the legislation as the Executive Committee of the assembly and is an example of consociationalist ("power-sharing") government.

Sinn Féin is the name of an Irish political party founded in 1905 by Arthur Griffith. It subsequently became a focus for various forms of Irish nationalism, especially Irish republicanism. After the Easter Rising in 1916, it grew in membership, with a reorganisation at its Ard Fheis in 1917. Its split in 1922 in response to the Anglo-Irish Treaty which led to the Irish Civil War and saw the origins of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, the two parties which have since dominated Irish politics. Another split in the remaining Sinn Féin organisation in the early years of the Troubles in 1970 led to the Sinn Féin of today, which is a republican, left-wing nationalist and secular party.
Padraig O'Malley is an Irish international peacemaker, author, and professor. O'Malley specializes in the problems of divided societies, such as South Africa and Northern Ireland. He has written extensively on these subjects and has been actively involved in promoting dialogue among representatives of differing factions. He's currently the John Joseph Moakley Distinguished Professor of Peace and Reconciliation at the University of Massachusetts Boston.

The Good Friday Agreement (GFA), or Belfast Agreement, is a pair of agreements signed on 10 April 1998 that ended most of the violence of The Troubles, a political conflict in Northern Ireland that had prevailed since the late 1960s. It was a major development in the Northern Ireland peace process of the 1990s. It is made up of the Multi-Party Agreement between most of Northern Ireland's political parties, and the British–Irish Agreement between the British and Irish governments. Northern Ireland's present devolved system of government is based on the agreement.
John Morrow was a Presbyterian minister and peace activist in Northern Ireland. He was integral in the 1965 founding of the Corrymeela Community, a Christian group committed to promoting peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland. He succeeded Corrymeela's founder Ray Davey as the leader of the community in 1980 and served as its leader until 1993, providing it with a sense of cohesion and direction in its work of ecumenical Christian leadership and help for families during the Troubles.

Reconciliation theology or the theology of reconciliation raises crucial theological questions about how reconciliation can be brought into regions of political conflict. The term differs from the conventional theological understanding of reconciliation, but likewise emphasises themes of justice, truth, forgiveness and repentance.
