Redeeming Our Communities (ROC) is a UK-based charity, founded by author and popular speaker Debra Green OBE in 2004.

ROC is a community engagement charity; people of goodwill working together towards safer, kinder communities. Their activities include partnerships with community groups, churches, police, fire service, local authorities and voluntary agencies. [1] They currently run over 250 projects throughout the UK targeting a variety of social needs, reaching over 2000 people every week.

History

The Redeeming Our Communities initiative was launched in 2004 at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton, where thousands of people across the North West gathered and pledged to reduce violent crime in the region. A year later that pledge was met when the Metro Newspaper reported that violent crime in the region had fallen by 11%, bucking the national trend. [2]

In 2006 ROC became a national organisation, holding an event in the NEC Arena in Birmingham. The event was attended by 7,000, and as a result many people across the UK signed up to become ROC Ambassadors, spreading the vision of ROC across the UK. After the National Launch, ROC began to host conferences to train and equip people in how to set up projects using the ROC model. [3]

Since the National Launch, ROC has moved into over 200 different regions across the UK, [4] including the Belfast Launch event in 2012. [5] During this time ROC have hosted several high-profile Launch Events, including the 2009 Liverpool Launch which attracted over 5,000 people and the 2010 Birmingham Launch which drew 2,000. [6] These high-profile events are held in partnership with local police forces in the hopes of building links and creating local ROC projects.

ROC launched in Scotland at the ROC Scotland Showcase event on 5 February 2014. [7] The event was attended by over 1700 people including 100 civic leaders and senior members of public services. The evening was hosted by Sally Magnusson and included performances from the Police Pipe Band, Midge Ure, Jai McDowall and the High School of Glasgow Chamber Choir. The evening inspired people to get involved in community projects. [8]

In recognition of her work ROC founder Debra Green received an OBE in June 2012. [9]

In 2018 ROC were awarded the Queen's Award for voluntary service and attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace.

ROC have developed a community engagement model called a ROC Conversation. They have delivered over 250 of these across the UK in Counties, Cities, towns, and villages. Their work has recently been recognised by the Home Office.

ROC projects

There are currently over 300 projects under the ROC banner. These projects are multi-agency and will usually involve partnerships among faith groups, police, and emergency services as well as various other statutory agencies and organisations.

Projects and initiatives include:

ROC claims to have seen reductions in crime as a result of their projects, including significant reductions in anti-social behaviour, [20] which has inspired additional ROC projects. [21]

In 2008 Debra Green wrote a book, containing the stories of many of the projects: Redeeming Our Communities: 21st Century Miracles of Social Transformation. Her next book, ROC your World; transforming communities for good, was published by River Publishing in March 2014. [22]

In 2012 ROC announced that they would be starting a restorative justice scheme called ROC Restore. [23]

In 2014 ROC received a new HQ as a community asset transfer, The FUSE in Trafford. The FUSE is a £5Million state of the art community centre received on a 22 year rent free lease in recognition of their work

In 2018 ROC Restore, restorative Justice project was awarded the RSQM, The Restorative Service Quality Mark Princess Ann visited ROC HQ to celebrate 5 years of their restorative justice work.

UK wide

In 2014, the charity launched into Scotland, hosting a Showcase Event on 5 February. [24] Following the event, it was reported by ROC that several projects were in the planning stages including in Parkhead, Queen's Park Glasgow, Newton Stewart and Edinburgh. [25]

Restorative justice Restitution with input from victims and offenders

Restorative justice is an approach to justice where one of the responses to a crime is to organize a meeting between the victim and the offender, sometimes with representatives of the wider community. The goal is for them to share their experience of what happened, to discuss who was harmed by the crime and how, and to create a consensus for what the offender can do to repair the harm from the offense. Volunteer Police Cadets (VPC) is a nationally recognised uniformed police youth organisation which operates in most parts of the United Kingdom. It is one of several cadet youth organisations including the Army Cadet Force, Sea Cadets, Royal Marine Cadets, Air Training Corps and Fire Cadets. The Police Cadets teach young people skills in policing, and some may assist police officers with low-risk activities. The purpose of the VPC is not to recruit police officers of the future, but to encourage the spirit of adventure and good citizenship among its members.

LGBT History Month is an annual month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, and the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements. It was founded in 1994 by Missouri high-school history teacher Rodney Wilson. LGBT History Month provides role models, builds community, and represents a civil rights statement about the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. As of 2022, LGBT History Month is a month-long celebration that is specific to Australia, Berlin, Canada, Cuba, Finland, Hungary, Italy, N. Ireland, Scotland, United Kingdom, the USA, and Wales.

David Davies (football administrator) British broadcaster and consultant

David Davies is a British broadcaster and consultant, formerly the Executive Director of the Football Association in England. He is a regular contributor to BBC News television and radio programmes and other networks. Since retiring from the FA, he has worked as a consultant to sporting and other organisations worldwide. Today he is a consultant with Portland Communications, based in London, advising on sport and other subjects.

Neighbourhood Watch in the United Kingdom is the largest voluntary crime prevention movement covering England and Wales with upwards of 2.3 million household members. The charity brings neighbors together to create strong, friendly and active communities in which crime can be tackled. Neighbourhood Watch Network is the umbrella organization supported by the Home Office to support Neighbourhood Watch groups and individuals across England and Wales.

The Message Trust is a Christian charity working to improve the lives of young people in the UK and beyond through work in schools, prisons and communities.

Aberdeen Safer Community Trust (Absafe) is an Aberdeen, Scotland based community safety charity. It was established in 1997, taking over from the local authority Safer Cities Project. It promotes a partnership approach to community safety issues.

Street Pastors

Street Pastors is an interdenominational network of Christian charities that operates worldwide.

City Hindus Network (CHN) is a not-for-profit organisation created to promote networking, spirituality, education and charity amongst Hindu professionals. It was founded in 2005 by Dhruv Patel OBE, who was succeeded by entrepreneur Pratik Dattani. Its current Chair is Alpesh Patel OBE, who was appointed in December 2019. CHN is focused on building closer relationships between Hindu professionals working in the City of London.

Autism Cymru Former Welsh national charity for autism

Autism Cymru was "Wales' national charity for autism" with offices in Cardiff, Wrexham, and Aberystwyth. The charity was established in May 2001 through an initial 3yrs grant provided by The Shirley Foundation. The founder chair of the Trustees was Dame Stephanie Shirley of the Shirley Foundation.

Katy Elizabeth Bourne is a Conservative politician who has served as the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner since winning the inaugural election in Sussex in November 2012. In 2016, she was re-elected for a second term in office. She was re-elected for a third term in 2021.

The Forgiveness Project is a UK-based charity that uses real stories of victims and perpetrators of crime and violence to help people explore ideas around forgiveness and alternatives to revenge. With no political or religious affiliations, The Forgiveness Project's independent and inclusive approach ensures its core message – that everyone has the potential to change their perspective and break the cycle of vengeance – resonates across all cultures.

Project Servator

Project Servator police deployments were originally introduced by the City of London Police in February 2014 as "New policing tactics to deter and detect criminal and terrorist activity, as well as to reassure the general public. " Project Servator has since been adopted by British Transport Police, Police Scotland, Essex Police, Ministry of Defence Police the Civil Nuclear Constabulary and the Metropolitan Police. The police have used Project Servator tactics in London, on the national rail network and at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, V Festival and shopping centres.

Chatty Café Scheme

The Chatty Café Scheme was started in 2017 as initiative to encourage conversation among strangers. The initiative promotes the marking of certain tables in cafés and other venues as tables at which talking to strangers is explicitly welcome. The initiative found support by several companies and politicians in the UK. The Chatty Café Scheme CIC was registered as a community interest company on 19 July 2019; Chatty Café was registered as a charity in Australia in 2020. The founder of the initiative and director of the company, Alexandra Louise Hoskyn, was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for 2021.
