The third of four boys, Remilson Santos Nery was born on March 31, 1961, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Remilson Nery spent his entire childhood in Irajá, a working-class district of north Rio. At an early age, he began his music education (guitar and music theory) with a professional guitarist and a religious sister fascinated by Brazilian traditional and classical music. From 1971 to 1978, without his parents' permission, Remilson Nery played in the percussion orchestra of Portela samba school.
From 1973–79, Nery studied classical guitar with Leo Soares, Mario Jorge Passos and Dorival Lessa at the Villa-Lobos Music School in Rio, He also studied music theory, harmony, music history, counterpoint and composition with composer César Guerra-Peixe. From 1981–86, Nery completed his Bachelor of Music Therapy at the Conservatório Brasileiro de Música in Rio de Janeiro.
From 1971 to 2010, Nery performed several concerts (classical, pop and world music) as a soloist and a chamber musician (classical or electric guitarist) across Brazil, Argentina, Chile, United States and Japan. During 1980-1983, he worked as an arranger for Polydor Record Brazil. Nery continued to write and publish classical music, such as ten pieces for classical guitar that were inspired by personal events, and published in 2015. [1] [2]
Heitor Villa-Lobos was a Brazilian composer, conductor, cellist, and classical guitarist described as "the single most significant creative figure in 20th-century Brazilian art music". Villa-Lobos has become the best-known South American composer of all time. A prolific composer, he wrote numerous orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal works, totaling over 2,000 works by his death in 1959. His music was influenced by both Brazilian folk music and stylistic elements from the European classical tradition, as exemplified by his Bachianas Brasileiras and his Chôros. His Etudes for classical guitar (1929) were dedicated to Andrés Segovia, while his 5 Preludes (1940) were dedicated to his spouse Arminda Neves d'Almeida, a.k.a. "Mindinha". Both are important works in the classical guitar repertory.
Bossa nova is a relaxed style of samba developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is mainly characterized by a calm syncopated rhythm with chords and fingerstyle mimicking the beat of a samba groove, as if it was a simplification and stylization on the guitar of the rhythm produced by a samba school band. Another defining characteristic of the style is the use of unconventional chords in some cases with complex progressions and "ambiguous" harmonies. A common misconception is that these complex chords and harmonies were derived from jazz, but samba guitar players have been using similar arrangement structures since the early 1920s, indicating a case of parallel evolution of styles rather than a simple transference from jazz to bossa nova. Nevertheless, bossa nova was influenced by jazz, both in the harmonies used and also by the instrumentation of songs, and today many bossa nova songs are considered jazz standards. The popularity of bossa nova has helped to renew samba and contributed to the modernization of Brazilian music in general.
Carlos Eduardo Lyra Barbosa was a Brazilian singer, and composer of numerous bossa nova and Música popular brasileira classics. He has also worked as a writer, with notable contributions to musical films such as Para Viver um Grande Amor and Intimidade. He and Antônio Carlos Jobim were the first two music composers, together with lyricists Vinicius de Moraes and Ronaldo Boscoli, to be recorded by João Gilberto on his first LP entitled Chega de Saudade (1959), which was called the first generation of Bossa Nova.
Baden Powell de Aquino, known professionally as Baden Powell, was a Brazilian guitarist. He combined classical techniques with popular harmony and swing. He performed in many styles, including bossa nova, samba, Brazilian jazz, Latin jazz and MPB. He performed on stage during most of his lifetime. Powell composed many pieces for guitar some of them now considered guitar standards, such as Abração em Madrid, Braziliense, Canto de Ossanha, Casa Velha, Consolação, Horizon, Imagem, Lotus, Samba, Samba Triste, Simplesmente, Tristeza e Solidão, and Samba da Benção. He released Os Afro-sambas, a watershed album in MPB, with Vinicius de Moraes in 1966. He's widely regarded as one of the greatest brazilian guitar players of all time.
