Rene Cruz was a Filipino sports administrator and police official. He served as the president of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) from 1993 to 1996. [1]
Prior to being a POC president,Cruz served as vice president in 1989. Under his term as POC President,the Philippines won a silver medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. [2] The country would have an Olympic medal drought until the 2016 edition. [3] He also served as the head of the Philippine Badminton Association. [2]
Cruz died at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center in Alabang,Muntinlupa due to cardiac arrest on September 29,2015. He was 85 years old. [2]

It was recognized by the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC),the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC),the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) and provisionally recognized by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). In 2021,the newly formed Philippine National Volleyball Federation became recognized by the POC,AVC and FIVB as the national sport association for volleyball in the Philippines.

Before breaking the Asian Athletics Championships record,he held the Philippine national record in pole vaulting with a record of 5.55 meters which he accomplished on April 29,2016 at the 78th Singapore Open Championships in Kallang,Singapore. He later broke the Asian Athletics Championships record with 5.71 meters on April 21,2019 on its 23rd biennial meet at Doha,Qatar which earned him the coveted gold medal finish. He currently holds the National Record which he broke in the same event.
