Reprodukt is a German comic book and graphic novel publisher headquartered in Berlin.

History

Reprodukt was founded by Dirk Rehm in 1991. [1] [2] Rehm chose the name—the German word for "reproduce"—because he viewed the printed pages of published comics as reproductions of the original artwork. [2] Entering the industry with a German-language republication of the Hernandez brothers' Love and Rockets [3] established the company's focus on alternative comics, especially avant-garde works by comic creators with distinctive styles. [1] Many of their published titles are autobiographical works targeted at educated, middle-class adult readers, [4] although they also release children's comics. One such series, "Kiste", a story about an animated cardboard box, [5] has been one of their bestsellers. [2]

Reprodukt has published comic books by American comic artists including Charles Burns, Dan Clowes, and Craig Thompson, New Zealander Dylan Horrocks, and Austrian artist Nicolas Mahler, [6] [7] as well as German comic book creators such as Mawil  [ de ] Anna Haifisch and Barbara Yelin [2]

Impact

Since its founding, Reprodukt has grown to become one of Germany's largest [3] and most important [1] comic book publishers. The majority of the company's releases have been licensed republication of previously published works. [8] By doing so, especially by republishing works in translation, they have made foreign artists more accessible to German-speaking audiences. [2] At times, this process of translation and republication is transformative rather than merely editorial, changing elements such as "binding, paper quality, format, and ... cost" that can alter readers' impressions of the works. [9] Some artists, such as Mahler, have even produced additional content specifically for Reprodukt editions. [7]

Both the company itself and its published works have been recognized with a variety of awards. Reprodukt received one of the Berlin Publishing Prize  [ de ]'s sponsorship awards in 2018, [10] and a seal of quality from the German Publishing Prize  [ de ] four times between 2019 and 2023. [11] [12] [13] [14] In 2020, Rehm received the K.-H Zillmer Publisher Prize  [ de ] for Reprodukt's role in introducing graphic novels to German culture. [15]

Model for the name was Gerhard Sondermann, the first publisher of Titanic.

The Georg Dehio Book Prize is a biennial literary award for authors who, "in their literary, scholarly or public work, address the themes of the common culture and history of the German people and their Eastern neighbors at a high level and from a broad perspective." Described as "prestigious" by the Austrian state broadcasting system ORF, the Dehio Prize is funded by the German government through the Office of the Federal Commissioner for Culture and Media, the competition being administered by the German Cultural Forum for Eastern Europe, a state-endowed agency. It commemorates the Tallinn-born German art historian Georg Dehio (1850-1932), whose pioneering emphasis on multi-ethnic and transnational cultural interconnections and influences in Eastern Europe serves as a guiding principle for the work of the German Cultural Forum.

The German national competition Bundeswettbewerb Gesang Berlin was inaugurated in 1966 as a competition for solo singing. Beginning in 1979, it has been held annually, for the categories Musical and Chanson in uneven years, for Opera, Operetta and concert singing in even years. The patron of the competition is the mayor of Berlin, where the competition is organized and held by the association Bundeswettbewerb Gesang Berlin.
