Requiem for a Village is a 1975 British film directed by David Gladwell. [1] [2] [3] [4]
The film was financed by the BFI Production fund. [5]
The BFI later declared it as follows: "David Gladwell has rarely been recognised as the director of a number of extraordinary, ground-breaking films exploring Britain's rural traditions and the undying power of memory, of which Requiem for a Village is arguably the finest example." [5]
In retrospective commentary, Alex Ramon later grouped it with 1970s rural cinema such as Penda’s Fen (1974) and Akenfield (1974) and wrote, "While the ‘folk horror’ label often attached to the film is not a perfect fit, Requiem for a Village is very far from a lulling nostalgic reverie: a montage of sexual violence is every bit as disturbing as it intends to be, as the film powerfully evokes tensions and confrontations between tradition and modernity.
