Res Artis is the peak member organisation for the international arts residencies field comprising more than 700 vetted members in over 85 countries. [1] [2] Founded in 1993, it operates a website and the largest existing network of artist residency programs. [3]
Founded in 1993 in Berlin, Germany, through the volunteer efforts of the Board of Directors and countless partners and friends to represent and support the needs of residential arts centers and programs, Res Artis has grown to become the largest network of its kind. Through the dynamic exchange of information via its website and publications and through regional and international face-to-face meetings, it promotes the role of residential art programs as a vital part of the contemporary arts world, stimulating the creative development and mobility of artists, and furthering intercultural understanding. Res Artis founding members include Michael Haerdter and William Edward Smart Jr. (1933–2019). [4] [5]
Each of Res Artis' members is dedicated to offering artists, curators, and all manner of creative people the essential time and place away from the pressures and habits of every-day life, an experience framed within a unique geographic and cultural context. Through Res Artis, organisations become part of a global community of colleagues engaged in dialogue through face-to-face meetings and virtually through an extensive online presence.
Members of the organisation include a wide variety of facilities that may take the form of an art colony, an artist-run space, or other regional residency networks.
Res Artis promotes the understanding of the catalytic role residential arts centers play in the development of Contemporary Arts in all cultures worldwide and across all creative media. The organization has been cited for its work to further the international mobility of artists and the promotion of cultural exchange through art residencies. [4] [6]
The heart of the network is its face-to-face meetings. They provide opportunities for members to meet, discuss, and learn first-hand about the host location. These are venues for sharing experiences, ideas, and meals, getting to know one another not only as colleagues but as people.
These meetings are organised in partnership with a Res Artis member, a local residency space, or other organisation. Res Artis meetings can focus on a particular theme, issue, profile or geographic region.
Art colonies are organic congregations of artists in towns, villages and rural areas, who are often drawn to areas of natural beauty, the prior existence of other artists, art schools there, or a lower cost of living. They are typically mission-driven planned communities, which administer a formal process for awarding artist residencies. A typical mission might include providing artists with the time, space, and support to create, fostering community among artists, and providing arts education, including lectures and workshops.
The Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) is an art school of Willamette University and is located in Portland, Oregon. Established in 1909, the art school grants Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees and graduate degrees including the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) and Master of Arts (MA) degrees. It has an enrollment of about 500 students. The college merged with Willamette University in 2021.
Artist-in-residence, or artist residencies, encompass a wide spectrum of artistic programs which involve a collaboration between artists and hosting organisations, institutions, or communities. They are programs which provide artists with space and resources to support their artistic practice. Contemporary artist residencies are becoming increasingly thematic, with artists working together with their host in pursuit of a specific outcome related to a particular theme.
The Intra Asia Network, or IAN, is a loose consortium of cultural workers and creative spaces, artist exchange projects, community engagement initiatives and artist residency programmes operating throughout Asia. This consortium was founded to facilitate the greater mobility of Asia's cultural producers, practitioners, and creative people through the development, promotion and empowerment of artist-in-residency and artist-in-community projects. Membership represents over 15 countries and hundreds of Asian art spaces and initiatives.

AAA is one of the most comprehensive publicly accessible collections of research materials in the field. In activating its collections, AAA initiates public, educational, and residency programmes. The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA) is a residential artist community in Amherst, Virginia, USA. Since 1971, VCCA has offered residencies of varying lengths with flexible scheduling for international artists, writers, and composers at its working retreat in the foothills of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. She worked as a contributing editor and leader of the monthly columns “The Name of Art” and “Art Situations” at “CinemArt” –the journal on cinematography and contemporary art.
