The incumbent councillors for Montagu and East Wards were returned unopposed, the incumbent councillor in West Ward faced Independent challenger P. W. Johnstone who had run unsuccessfully last year. [31] [32] [33]

The election was won by Johnstone. [34] [35]

Following the council receiving a petition from over 100 ratepayers requesting it, the council planned for a poll on deciding the day of a half-holiday be held alongside the election. [36]
