Revans University, also known as The University of Action Learning (UAL), is the unaccredited degree-awarding body for the UK-based International Management Centres Association (IMCA or IMC Association). [1] Revans University's registered address is in Port Vila, Vanuatu, [1] though it has also been associated with Boulder, Colorado. [2] It has no physical campus and all its activities take place online. [1] [3] [4] As of 2005, Revans University's partner organization IMCA was based in Buckingham, UK. [2] IMCA provides accreditation of the Action Learning program of Gaia University and possibly others. (See Accreditation below).

Foundation

According to Revans University and IMCA's jointly-issued literature from 2004, IMCA founded Revans University in 1999 after IMCA's own degree programmes were about to be made illegal by the Education Reform Act 1988; [5] IMCA made unsuccessful approaches to UK's Council for National Academic Awards and several universities in the UK and Australia before deciding to found Revans University in the US under IMCA's own sponsorship. [5]

Methods of study

Revans University and ICMA are proponents of action learning, pioneered by Reg Revans.

Rather than requiring a traditional thesis, Revans University and IMCA award doctoral degrees on the basis of an "explication" – a short, 10,000 word document describing a candidate's professional experience and original contributions to knowledge. [1]

Accreditation

Prior to 2005, Revans University and IMCA were accredited by the US Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), but this accreditation was removed by DETC in 2005. [1] [2] Neither Revans University nor IMCA is recognised as a UK degree-awarding body or course provider. [1] As of 22 May 2021, neither Revans University nor IMCA have regained certification by DETC. [6]

According to The Times Educational Supplement, British universities are not accepting qualifications accredited by Revans University; [7] [8] this has led to complaints from former students. [7] [8]

Gaia University states that its degree programmes are accredited through "International Management Centres(IMC) of the UK and New Zealand". [9]

Action Learning is an approach to problem solving that involves taking action and reflecting upon the results. This method is purported to help improve the problem-solving process and simplify the solutions developed as a result. The theory of Action Learning and its epistemological position were originally developed by Reg Revans, who applied the method to support organizational and business development initiatives and improve on problem solving efforts.

The name Warnborough is associated with several related institutions of higher education existing from 1973 to the present, including Warnborough College Oxford, Warnborough College UK, Warnborough College Ireland and Warnborough University, some of which are no longer in operation. Warnborough College UK provides educational programmes both on-site in Canterbury, England, and by distance learning. Warnborough College Ireland offers distance-learning programmes from Ireland. Warnborough College has been the subject of multiple controveries relating to misrepresentation, education quality, legal and tax troubles, and eligibility to participate in government financial assistance.

Unaccredited institutions of higher education are colleges, trade schools, seminaries, and universities which do not have formal educational accreditation.

Reginald William Revans was an academic professor, administrator and management consultant who pioneered the use of Action learning. He was also a long jumper who represented Britain at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam where he finished 32nd in the long jump event. At the first British Empire Games, in 1930, he won the silver medal in both the long jump and triple jump competition.

Washington International University is an online unaccredited institution of higher education founded in 1994 and currently incorporated in the British Virgin Islands. It describes itself as a "cyberspace university" and a "university without borders", serving clients from around the world online. The university website states that WIU's graduates have come from 112 countries.

The University of Atlanta was a private, for-profit, distance education university headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. It opened in Mobile, Alabama as Barrington University until it received accreditation in 2008. It relocated to Atlanta in 2008 and changed to University of Atlanta and was authorized by the State of Georgia's Nonpublic Post Secondary Education Commission. Until it closed June 30, 2013, the University of Atlanta was accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council.
