The Rheinmetall Seahawk is the maritime adaptation of Rheinmetall's remotely controlled weapon system. A range of calibers can be mounted on the system. [1]
According to Jane's Defence Weekly the system uses the same sensors and servos as the manufacturer's larger naval guns. [2] The manufacturer can provide its low-weight version, mounting an autocannon of up to 40mm, or an ultralight version of the mounting, suitable for mounting machine guns or automatic grenade launchers on small patrol boats. [3]
The mounting is capable of allowing the operator to electronically switch ammunition from two different magazines. [1]
Sensors include an infrared camera, a low-light camera, and a laser range finder. [1]
Rheinmetall Air Defence AG is a division of German armament manufacturer Rheinmetall, created when the company's Oerlikon Contraves unit was renamed on 1 January 2009 and integrated with Rheinmetall's other air-defence products. Oerlikon Contraves was a Swiss anti-aircraft artillery manufacturer famous for its adaptation of the 1916 20 mm Becker as the Oerlikon 20 mm autocannon design, which was used in the Second World War and still in use today. Copies and derivatives of these designs were made by German, French, British, and Japanese weapon manufacturers. Oerlikon Contraves was purchased by Rheinmetall in 1999.
The Halifax-class frigate, also referred to as the City class, is a class of multi-role patrol frigates that have served the Royal Canadian Navy since 1992. The class is the outcome of the Canadian Patrol Frigate Project, which dates to the mid-1970s. HMCS Halifax was the first of an eventual twelve Canadian-designed and Canadian-built vessels which combine traditional anti-submarine capabilities with systems to deal with surface and air threats as well. The Oerlikon GDF or Oerlikon 35 mm twin cannon is a towed anti-aircraft gun made by Oerlikon Contraves. The system was originally designated 2 ZLA/353 ML but this was later changed to GDF-001. It was developed in the late 1950s and is used by around 30 countries.
The Mk44 Bushmaster II is a 30 mm chain gun manufactured by Northrop Grumman. It is a derivative of the 25 mm M242 Bushmaster, and uses 70% of the same parts as the M242 while increasing the firepower by as much as 50% with the 20% increase in caliber size. The barrel is chromium-plated for extended life. The gun uses standard GAU-8 Avenger ammunition that is available in API, HEI and APFSDS-T variants.

MSI-Defence Systems [...] has since sold the Seahawk LW20K variant (fitted with the Oerlikon 20mm KAA cannon) for Damen 5009 Stan Patrol ships built for the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard, and the Seahawk LW14.5P version (integrating the Romarm 14.5mm heavy machine gun) to an Asian customer.
