Richard Franklin Appleby (born 17 November 1940) is a retired Australian Anglican bishop. [1]

Appleby he was educated at the University of Melbourne. [2] Ordained in 1967, [3] his first posts were curacies in Glenroy and North Balwyn. [4] He was then warden of Wollaston College and chaplain to the Archbishop of Perth. From 1975 he was rector of Belmont and then Dean of Bathurst (1980–1983). From his consecration as a bishop on 2 February 1983 [5] to 1992 he was Assistant Bishop of Newcastle; [6] then he became diocesan Bishop of the Northern Territory until 1999; he served as an Assistant Bishop of Brisbane for the Northern Region, [7] until 5 February 2006; and finally as Bishop Assisting the Primate of Australia. [8] He is married to Elizabeth Appleby. [9]

On 19 February 2019, the Professional Standards Tribunal of the Newcastle diocese recommended that Appleby be removed from holy orders as a result of his failure to protect children after being informed of instances of child sexual abuse in the 1980s and '90s. However, a review board determined that Appleby had been denied procedural fairness in the decision. [10]

The Anglican Diocese of Adelaide is a diocese of the Anglican Church of Australia. It is centred in the city of Adelaide in the state of South Australia and extends along the eastern shore of the Gulf St Vincent from the town of Eudunda in the north to Aldgate in the south. The diocesan cathedral is Saint Peter's Cathedral in Adelaide. The diocese was founded in 1847 with Augustus Short as the first bishop. The incumbent Archbishop of Adelaide since 2017 has been Geoffrey Smith, who has also been the Anglican Primate of Australia since 2020.

The Anglican Diocese of Melbourne is the metropolitan diocese of the Province of Victoria in the Anglican Church of Australia. The diocese was founded from the Diocese of Australia by letters patent of 25 June 1847 and includes the cities of Melbourne and Geelong and also some more rural areas. The cathedral church is St Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne. The current Archbishop of Melbourne since 2006 is Philip Freier, who was translated from the Anglican Diocese of The Northern Territory, and who was the Anglican Primate of Australia from 2014 to 2020.

Philip Freier Australian Anglican bishop

Philip Leslie Freier is an Australian Anglican bishop. He has been the 13th Archbishop of Melbourne since 16 December 2006. He served as Primate of Australia from 28 June 2014 until 31 March 2020. Previously, he served as Bishop of the Northern Territory between 1999 and 2006.

Alfred Charles Holland was an Australian Anglican bishop. He was consecrated as a bishop on 6 August 1972 and was an assistant bishop in the Diocese of Perth before becoming the diocesan Bishop of Newcastle in New South Wales from 1978 to 1992.

John Charles Vockler FODC was an Australian bishop and Franciscan friar. He was originally a bishop in the Anglican Church of Australia but later become the primate of the Anglican Catholic Church, a Continuing Anglican church.

William David Hair McCall was an Australian Anglican bishop.

Donald Norman Shearman was an Australian Anglican bishop who served as Bishop of Rockhampton from 1963 to 1971 and Bishop of Grafton from 1973 to 1985. In 2004, a church tribunal found Shearman guilty of misconduct for sexually abusing a schoolgirl while serving as a boarding master at an Anglican hostel in Forbes, New South Wales, in the 1950s. On 25 August 2004, Shearman became the first member of the clergy in the Anglican Church of Australia to be removed from holy orders as a result of that finding.

John Wallace Chisholm, was an Australian divine who served as the tenth Anglican Bishop of Melanesia and first Archbishop of the Province of Melanesia. He was educated at Trinity College, University of Melbourne and ordained in 1947. His first post was as a Curate at St Stephen's Church, Rochester Row, Westminster after which he was Sub-Dean of Ss Peter and Paul Cathedral, Dogura, Territory of Papua and New Guinea. From his consecration as a bishop on 24 February 1964 until 1967 he was an Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of New Guinea when he became Bishop of Melanesia, a post he held until 26 January 1975 when the Diocese of Melanesia became a province and he automatically became Archbishop of Melanesia and Bishop of Central Melanesia. He died on 24 May, shortly after signing the last paperwork of the Province's creation process.

Ian Gordon Combe George was an Australian Anglican bishop. He was the third Archbishop of Adelaide and Metropolitan of South Australia from 1991 to 2004.

Raymond George Smith is a retired Australian Anglican bishop. He served as an assistant bishop in the Anglican Diocese of Sydney, as the first Bishop of South Western Sydney from 1 November 1993 to 31 December 2001.
