Richard Cock (born 1949) is a South African musician and conductor currently based in Johannesburg.

Early life and education

Cock was born in Port Elizabeth in 1949 and was educated at Woodridge College in the Eastern Cape, and Diocesan College and the South African College of Music in Cape Town. He was awarded a scholarship to the Royal School of Church Music in 1972. [1]

Career

United Kingdom

He was an alto lay vicar at Chichester Cathedral before becoming Assistant Organist in 1978. [2] As was customary for the cathedral's assistant organist, he was also Director of Music at Prebendal School, the cathedral choir school. He also established the Chichester Cathedral Choristers' Association (CCCA). [3]

South Africa

Cock returned to South Africa in 1980. Since then he has been a producer working for the South African Broadcasting Corporation, Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra of South Africa (1991-1999), Director of Music of St Mary's Cathedral, Johannesburg and the current Artistic Director of the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra [4] [5] He is also acclaimed as South Africa's 'first professional countertenor'. John Rutter's Gloria is a musical setting of parts of the Latin Gloria. He composed it in 1974 on a commission from Mel Olson, and conducted the premiere in Omaha, Nebraska. The Southern Cathedrals Festival is a five-day music festival held in rotation among the English cathedrals of Chichester, Winchester and Salisbury, in the penultimate week of July. The festival was restored in 1960 after initial attempts to create the annual occasion were followed by 28 years without it. The choristers and probationers are all boarders at the Prebendal School, the cathedral's choir school. The lay vicars are professional singers who all have everyday jobs.

The organs of Chichester Cathedral are the major source of instrumental music at the cathedral, being played for daily services and accompanying the choir, as well as being used for concerts and recitals. There has been organ music at Chichester Cathedral almost continuously since the medieval period, with a break in the mid-17th century during the Commonwealth period.

Adrian Frederick Partington is an English conductor, chorus master, organist and pianist. He is director of music at Gloucester Cathedral, joint conductor of the Three Choirs Festival and artistic director for the Gloucester festival years, director of the BBC National Chorus of Wales, conductor of Gloucester Choral Society, and former conductor of Bristol Choral Society and leader of the postgraduate choral conducting course at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.
