Richard John Knight played rugby union for Otago between 1982 and 1992. He played as a lock. He holds the record for the most games played for Otago at 170. [1] He scored six tries for Otago. He said, jokingly of his tries, that Otago coach Laurie Mains "used to give him a rocket for not doing the hard stuff" whenever he scored a try [2]

He also played for the South Island and the Possibles in 1986 but missed out on making the All Blacks that year. [3] [2] He played in the Otago team that won the 1991 National Provincial Championship. [4]

The Otago Rugby Football Union is the official governing body of rugby union for the Otago region of New Zealand. The union is based in the city of Dunedin, and its home ground is Forsyth Barr Stadium. The top representative team competes in the ITM Cup, New Zealand's top provincial competition. The union was to have been liquidated in March 2012. However a deal involving the Dunedin City Council allowed it to keep operating. Otago have won the Ranfurly Shield on seven occasions. They were the National provincial championship winners in 1991 and 1998. They have a proud record playing international teams, having defeated South Africa and the British and Irish Lions.

John Kahukura Raymond Timu is a New Zealand former rugby league and rugby union footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s who achieved international selection for New Zealand in both rugby codes, appearing in 26 tests for the All Blacks in union and nine for the Kiwis in league. Timu's usual position was centre in league and in union he would play at full-back or on the wing.

The Otago Infantry Regiment was a military unit that served within the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF) in World War I during the Gallipoli Campaign (1915) and on the Western Front (1916–1919). This Regiment and the Otago Mounted Rifles Regiment were composed mostly of men from Otago and Southland. The Otago Infantry Regiment represented the continuation of the Dunedin and Invercargill Militia Battalions formed in 1860.

Stuart Thomas Forster is a former New Zealand rugby union player. A halfback, Forster represented Hawke's Bay and Otago at a provincial level, and the Otago Highlanders in the first two years of Super Rugby. He was a member of the New Zealand national side, the All Blacks, from 1993 to 1995, appearing in 12 matches including six internationals.

Stephen Edward Hotton is a former Otago rugby player who played 146 games for Otago between 1983 and 1993. He played in the front row as a prop. He played seven games for the New Zealand Maori rugby team in 1988. He was a cult hero at home games at Carisbrook with the Steve Hotton Fan Club cheering him on. He was a member of the 1991 Otago team which won the first division championship. Mike Brewer said that he was a "very important player to Otago...he was crucial in letting me know what was really happening up front" and that he "was regarded as the team clown...it was in his nature to crack a joke when things were getting too tense".

Paul James Cooke is a former rugby player who played on the left wing and amassed 107 games and 72 tries for Otago. Described as a "superb finisher", his 134 tries in 192 first class games is considered an excellent strike rate.

Sean Withy is a New Zealand rugby union player who plays for the Highlanders in Super Rugby and Otago in the National Provincial Championship (NPC). His playing position is flanker.
