Richard Frank Satterthwaite (born 11 December 1949), popularly known as Richard Mabala, [3] is a British-born Tanzanian author, social activist, [4] columnist [5] and academic, [6] [7] predominantly recognized for his tale books Hawa The Bus Driver, [8] Mabala The Farmer [9] and Run Free which won him a CODE's Burt Award for African Literature. [10]

Biography

Mabala [11] was born in the United Kingdom. He moved to Tanzania in 1973 as a volunteer with the Voluntary Service Overseas. He was one of the first five British volunteers to be allowed into the country after Tanzania broke off diplomatic relations with Britain over the independence of Zimbabwe and became a Tanzanian citizen [12] in 1982 after giving up his passport [13] to become an official Tanzanian. He also served as a professor [14] at the university of Dar es Salaam. [15] [16]

Mabala is currently (as at April 2024) Tanzania Chairperson of the Asante Africa Foundation a nn-profit organisation that works with youth in Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya [17] .

Swahili, also known by its local name Kiswahili, is a Bantu language originally spoken by the Swahili people, who are found primarily in Tanzania, Kenya and Mozambique. The number of current Swahili speakers, be they native or second-language speakers, is estimated to be over 200 million, with Tanzania known to have most of the native speakers.

Bongo Flava is a nickname for Tanzanian music. The genre developed in the 1990s, mainly as a derivative of American hip hop and traditional Tanzanian styles such as taarab and dansi, with additional influences from reggae, R&B, and afrobeats, to form a unique style of music. Nancy Abraham Sumari is a Tanzanian author, business woman, social entrepreneur and beauty pageant titleholder. She is the Managing Director of Bongo5 Media Group (T) Ltd, The Executive Director of The Neghesti Sumari Foundation and The Jenga Hub, as well as a published author of the children's book series, Nyota Yako. In 2017 Africa Youth Awards named her among the 100 Most Influential Young Africans.

Edwin Semzaba was a Tanzanian novelist, playwright, actor and director. He wrote his works mainly in Swahili. He taught in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where he taught, among other courses, creative writing and acting. He won the first award of East African Writers awarded by the Institute of Swahili Research for his novel Funke Bugebuge and the "grandchildren's adventure book writing competition" awarded by the Swedish Embassy in Tanzania (2007).

Miss Universe Tanzania is a beauty pageant that was first held in 2007. It is the national contest to choose the representative for the Miss Universe pageant.

Mathias E. Mnyampala (1917–1969) was a Tanzanian writer, lawyer, and poet. Mnyampala was born on 18 November according to a personal record form of 1956, but he wrote in his autobiography, Maisha ni kugharimia, that he only knew the year with accuracy. He was born in the hamlet of Muntundya depending on the village of Ihumwa in Chamwino District in Dodoma region at the time part of German East Africa. He died on 8 June 1969 in Dodoma city, Tanzania. Mnyampala wrote in Swahili, the lingua franca of East Africa, not Cigogo, the native language of his ethnic group.

Edward John Kumwembe famously known as Edo Kumwembe is a Tanzanian journalist sports writer and a football commentator at Wasafi Media. He is a pundit for SuperSport TV in South Africa doing football commentary in Swahili language since August 2016. He doubles as a host for a sports talk show on Wasafi FM and a sports columnist for Mwanaspoti a Swahili sports newspaper published by Mwananchi Communications Limited in Tanzania.
