Richard W. West was an American politician. He was the mayor of Newport News,Virginia from 1932 to 1936. [1]

The contract to build her was awarded to Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Newport News,Virginia on 19 April 1982 and her keel was laid down on 3 March 1984. She was launched on 15 March 1986 sponsored by Mrs. Rosemary D. Trible,and commissioned on 3 June 1989. Mayor Jessie M. Rattley presented the ship with a commemorative plaque containing the poem "Newport News," written by Newport News native Ronald W. Bell,whose poem "Admiral Rickover" also appears upon a plaque aboard the Los Angeles-class submarine Hyman G. Rickover.
Joe Samuel Frank was an American politician who was the mayor of Newport News,Virginia. A native of Newport News,and a lawyer he was first elected mayor for the term starting July 1,1996. He was re-elected in May 1998,2002,and 2006. His last term expired on June 30,2010. He was the first directly-elected mayor in the history of the city. Frank was an Eagle Scout and was awarded the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award in 2009. In honor to this occasion,the Captain's Lounge in the Rappahannock Scout Camp at Bayport Scout Reservation was to be named in his honor.
Jessie Menifield Rattley served as the mayor of Newport News,Virginia from 1986 to 1990,the first woman and first African-American to hold the mayorship.
Harry Eugene Atkinson was the mayor of Newport News,Virginia from July 1,1974 to July 1,1976. His single term in office saw the development of two major landmark buildings in the city's midtown area - the Rouse Tower office complex in 1974 and Newmarket North Mall in 1975. Also completed during Atkinson's term was the first span of the four-lane James River Bridge that would eventually replace the original two-lane bridge.
