Richard Douglas Engle (born April 7,1957) is an American former Major League Baseball pitcher. He batted right and threw left-handed.
Engle graduated from Clermont Northeastern High School in Ohio in 1977 and then was signed by the Expos as an amateur free agent. He later said that his goal upon signing with the Expos was to make the majors by 1980. [1] According to the scout who signed him,however,Engle was blocked from joining the team's MLB roster that year by the presence of left-handed pitcher Fred Norman,who the Expos had given a guaranteed contract. [2]
Engle was not able to make his Major League debut until the following year against his hometown team,the Cincinnati Reds,on September 2,1981. Despite a shaky start,Engle was able to strike out George Foster and Ray Knight to finish his outing. [3]
On May 3,1983,a day after taking the loss for the minor league Charlotte O's,Engle surprised the team by reporting to the clubhouse in civilian clothes before that day's game and telling them that he was retiring,had packed his bags and would be returning home to Batavia,Ohio. [4] [5]
Hubert "Hubie" Brooks is an American former professional baseball right fielder,third baseman,and shortstop. He played 15 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1980 to 1994 for the New York Mets,Montreal Expos,Los Angeles Dodgers,California Angels,and Kansas City Royals. Brooks was selected third overall in the 1978 Major League Baseball draft by the New York Mets and went on to play for five different teams over a 15-year career,and was twice named an All-Star. MLB pitcher Donnie Moore was Brooks' cousin.

The 1981 Montreal Expos season was the 13th season in franchise history. They made it to the postseason for the first time in franchise history. Their playoff run ended in the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers,with Rick Monday hitting a ninth-inning solo home run in game 5,subsequently referred to as "Blue Monday" by Expos fans. This was the closest the Expos ever got to a World Series appearance while in Montreal.
