A running back (RB) is a member of the offensive backfield in gridiron football. The primary roles of a running back are to receive handoffs from the quarterback to rush the ball, to line up as a receiver to catch the ball, and block. There are usually one or two running backs on the field for a given play, depending on the offensive formation. A running back may be a halfback, a wingback, or a fullback. A running back will sometimes be called a "feature back" if he is the team's key player/more prominent running back.
Michael Joseph Alstott is an American former professional football player who was a fullback in the National Football League (NFL) for 12 seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Nicknamed "A-Train", he played college football for the Purdue Boilermakers and was selected by the Buccaneers in the second round of the 1996 NFL draft. Alstott received six Pro Bowl and three first-team All-Pro honors during his career, in addition to being part of the Buccaneers team that won the franchise's first Super Bowl title in Super Bowl XXXVII. For his accomplishments in Tampa Bay, he was inducted to the Buccaneers Ring of Honor in 2015. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest fullbacks of all time. One of the NFL's YouTube channels called Alstott "the last legendary fullback".
Edgar Bennett III is an American football coach and former running back who is the wide receivers coach for the Las Vegas Raiders of the National Football League (NFL). Bennett played college football for the Florida State Seminoles and was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the fourth round of the 1992 NFL draft. He also played for the Chicago Bears.
Richard Jose Casares was an American professional football player who was a fullback in the National Football League (NFL) and American Football League (AFL) for twelve seasons during the 1950s and 1960s. Casares played college football for the University of Florida, where he was standout fullback and kicker. Casares played professionally for the Chicago Bears and Washington Redskins of the NFL, and was a member of the expansion Miami Dolphins of the AFL.
James Finn Jr. is an American former professional football fullback. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears as the final pick of the 1999 NFL draft. He played college football at the University of Pennsylvania.
Gregory B. Jones Sr. is an American former professional football player who was a fullback in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Florida State Seminoles and was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the second round of the 2004 NFL draft and also played for the Houston Texans.
Bryan Heath Evans is an American former professional football player who was a fullback in the National Football League (NFL). After playing college football for the Auburn Tigers, he was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the third round of the 2001 NFL draft. He also played in the NFL for the Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, and New Orleans Saints, the last of which he won a Super Bowl with while on injured reserve. Evans retired after the 2010 season and was formerly an analyst with NFL Network.
Jarrod Ray Bunch is an American former football player, and former head coach of the Beverly Hills High School football team. He played college football for the Michigan Wolverines from 1986 to 1990. He was the first-round pick for the New York Giants in the 1991 NFL draft. Bunch was named New York Giants Offensive Player of the Year in 1992. In the 1993 training camp, Bunch sustained a knee injury that tore ligaments in his knee that sidelined him for seven weeks; upon his return, his ability to play was greatly affected. After multiple surgeries in the offseason, his contract with the Giants was terminated after he failed a physical examination before the start of 1994 season. He signed with Los Angeles Raiders two weeks later. Bunch retired from football in 1995. He is the president of the NFLPA former players Los Angeles Chapter. He and his wife Robin Emtage live in Beverly Hills, California.
Richard Spielman is an American football executive. He was the general manager of the Miami Dolphins in 2004 and the Minnesota Vikings from 2012 to 2022. He formerly worked for ESPN on NFL Live. Spielman is the older brother of Chris Spielman, former Detroit Lions and Buffalo Bills linebacker.
Robert Edward Douglas II is an American former professional football fullback who played for the New York Giants in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at the University of Memphis.
Onzell Andre "Rudy" Harris is a former American football player. Harris first gained attention as a running back for Brockton High School. He attended Clemson University, where he played football 1990 to 1992. He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fourth round of the 1993 NFL draft. He played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Buccaneers in 1993 and 1994. He had his first start in an NFL game against the San Francisco 49ers in November 1993 and had a 25-yard pass reception in the game. After spending two seasons with the Buccaneers, Harris was released in August 1995. He played in 18 games in the NFL, two as a starter. In his two NFL seasons, he rushed for 29 yards on nine carries and caught six passes for 59 yards.
Jason Gavadza is a former National Football League (NFL) tight end and Super Bowl champion as a member of the Baltimore Ravens, and also played in the Canadian Football League (CFL) as a fullback for the Toronto Argonauts, Montreal Allouettes, and BC Lions.
Jerome Jean-Marie Felton is an American former football fullback who played in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Furman, and was selected by the Detroit Lions in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL draft. He also played for the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings, and Buffalo Bills. With the Vikings, he was a fundamental part of Adrian Peterson's success, including Peterson's 2,097 rushing yards season in 2012.
John Edward Conner is a former American football fullback. Conner earned a 2009 College Football All-America Team selection and was one of the best fullback prospects in the 2010 NFL draft. He was drafted in the fifth round by the New York Jets. He is nicknamed "the Terminator" because of the name he shares with the main character from the popular movie franchise and because of his aggressive blocking style against defensive players.
Henry Philip Hynoski Jr. is a former American football fullback who played for the New York Giants from 2011 to 2014. He won Super Bowl XLVI with the team over the New England Patriots. Hynoski played college football at the University of Pittsburgh.
Bradie Ewing is a former American football fullback who played in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Wisconsin. He was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the 5th round of the 2012 NFL draft.
Kyle Juszczyk is an American professional football fullback for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Harvard Crimson, and was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL draft.
