Ridge (previously known as Tectonic Labs) is a cloud provider based in Boston, Massachusetts. The company provides a computing platform for users who want to run workloads with Kubernetes-based architectures in various locations. [1] Ridge's distributed cloud architecture offers an alternative to large public cloud providers, allowing users to deploy and manage cloud-native workloads in proximity to their end users. [2]

Contents

Ridge partners with data centers and managed service providers to offer managed cloud native services.[ citation needed ] These services allow data centers to use their existing infrastructure without the need for additional capital investment. [3] In 2022, Ridge was recognized as a Cool Vendor in Cloud-Native Computing by Gartner [4] and its cloud platform and Kubernetes managed services were evaluated by 451 Research, a division of S&P Global Research, for their ability to serve as an alternative to centralized public cloud services. [5]

In 2018, Ridge raised $10 million in seed funding in a round led by NFX, Mayfield, and Viola. In 2021, Ridge raised an additional $12 million in a Series A funding round led by Chartered Group. [6]

History

Ridge was founded in 2018 as Tectonic Labs by Jonathan Seelig, co-founder of Akamai Technologies, [7] Nir Sheffi, and Mati Lerner. In 2020, the company officially changed its name to Ridge. In 2021, Ridge was recognized as one of the 20 best Boston-based cloud infrastructure startups. [8]

In 2022, Ridge entered into a partnership with Hivelocity, a bare metal platform, which allowed Ridge to provide its cloud-native services to Hivelocity's bare metal customers in regions where major cloud infrastructure providers do not have server infrastructure. [9]

Ridge's platform includes VPN and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) capabilities, which promote interoperability with any hybrid or multi-cloud architecture. This allows enterprises to run cloud-native applications on top of their existing IT architecture. The company's platform has been certified by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) as a Kubernetes host platform. [10]

The Ridge platform is implemented through a single API that can be overlaid onto existing infrastructure, including on-premises and colocated servers and local data centers. [11]

Cloud computing is the on-demand availability of computer system resources, especially data storage and computing power, without direct active management by the user. Large clouds often have functions distributed over multiple locations, each of which is a data center. Cloud computing relies on sharing of resources to achieve coherence and typically uses a "pay as you go" model, which can help in reducing capital expenses but may also lead to unexpected operating expenses for users.
