In Dutch and Belgian cuisine, rijsttaart(je)/rijstevlaai (Dutch) or tarte au riz (French) (German : Reisfladen, all translate to “rice flan”) is a pie with a filling based on rice pudding. It is native to Verviers and popular around the wider region of Eastern Belgium, south-eastern Netherlands and the German region around Aachen. Typically they are made 'single-crust'—with no layer of pastry covering the top.

Kheer, also known as payasam or payesh, is a pudding or porridge popular in South Asia, usually made by boiling milk, sugar or jaggery, and rice. It can be additionally flavoured with dried fruits, nuts, cardamom and saffron. Instead of rice, it may contain cracked wheat, vermicelli (sevai), sago or tapioca (sabudana).

It comprises 11.000 km2 and has around 3.9 million inhabitants around the city-corridor of Aachen–Maastricht–Hasselt–Liège. The seat of the region has been in Eupen, Belgium since 1 January 2007. Within a wider context, the region is part of what is called the Blue Banana European urbanisation corridor.
Zerde is a traditional Iraqi, Mesopotamian dessert. The original rice pudding, infused with a generous amount of saffron giving it a vibrant yellow hue and a delicate floral flavour. This is a festive dish popular at weddings, births, and during holy festivities such as the first Sunday of the month of Sha'aban celebrating the birth of the prophet Zakariyya, and the first ten days of the sacred month of Muharram.
