Riyan Airport (also known as Riyan Mukalla Airport) is an airport in Mukalla, Yemen.

Mukalla Place in Hadramaut, Yemen

Mukalla is a seaport and the capital city of Yemen's largest governorate, Hadhramaut. The city is located in the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula on the Gulf of Aden, on the shores of the Arabian Sea, about 480 kilometres east of Aden. It is the most important port in the Hadhramaut, and the fifth-largest city in Yemen, with a population of approximately 300,000. The city is served by the nearby Riyan Airport.

Yemen Republic in Western Asia

Yemen , officially known as the Republic of Yemen, is a country at the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula in Western Asia. Yemen is the second-largest Arab sovereign state in the peninsula, occupying 527,970 square kilometres. The coastline stretches for about 2,000 kilometres. It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, the Red Sea to the west, the Gulf of Aden and Guardafui Channel to the south, and the Arabian Sea and Oman to the east. Yemen's territory includes more than 200 islands.

This is not the former RAF Riyan, which is located closer to Mukalla, but a newly built airport.

Flights were suspended in March 2015, due to military actions from Saudi Arabia. [1]

Covering approximately 70,000 square miles, roughly the size of England and Wales, Qu'aiti was the third largest kingdom in Arabia after the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Sultanate of Oman. Its capital was Mukalla, and it was divided into six provinces including Al-Mukalla, Ash-Shihr, Shibam, Du'an, the Western Province and Hajr. Apart from Al-Mukalla, Ash-Shihr and Shibam were the Sultanate's major cities.

Alyemda, internationally known as Democratic Yemen Airlines or just Yemen Airlines, was the national airline of South Yemen. It was established at Aden on 11 March 1971 after nationalizing Brothers Air Services (BASCO) which was a private company owned by the Ba Haroon Brothers. It operated a network of flight routes throughout Africa and the Middle East, with its hub at Aden Airport, the former Khormaksar Air Force Base.

Balhaf is an industrial port town and an oasis in an area of coastal dunes in the Burum Coastal Area of Yemen. It has palm trees and white sand, which gives way to fields of black lava and to the fishing port of Bir-Ali. Qana, a major point of departure of the Route I'Encens, was the main port of the ancient kingdom of Hadhramaut, and is dominated by a hill, Husn al-Ghurab, or remains of the ancient vestiges. A I'écart is located on an extinct volcano, a crater lake with turquoise waters. The "Corniche" road leads to the coastal port of Burum. Burum, a typical fishing port, is an old village surrounded by a gypsum kilns. Close by, one can see the large bay of Mukalla, whose wetlands are populated by migrant birds from India or Africa.

The Battle of Mukalla (2015) was a battle between al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, local tribesmen, and the Yemen Army for control of the coastal city of Mukalla, Yemen.

Khalid Saeed Batarfi,, also known as Abū al-Miqdād al-Kindī, is a Saudi Arabian militant and a senior member of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. He oversaw the Yemen-based group's media network and led jihadist fighters in their takeover of Yemen's Abyan Governorate in 2011, where he was accorded the position of emir. He also reputedly carried out terrorist attacks in the Abyan and Hadhramaut governorates.

Cyclone Chapala

Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm Chapala was the second strongest tropical cyclone on record in the Arabian Sea, according to the American-based Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC). The third named storm of the 2015 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, it developed on 28 October off western India from the monsoon trough. Fueled by record warm water temperatures, the system quickly intensified and was named Chapala by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). By 30 October, the storm developed an eye in the center of a well-defined circular area of deep convection. That day, the IMD estimated peak three-minute sustained winds of 215 km/h (130 mph), and the JTWC estimated one-minute winds of 240 km/h (150 mph); only Cyclone Gonu in 2007 was stronger in the Arabian Sea.

The Second Battle of Mukalla refers to an armed conflict between al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) and the Saudi-led Coalition. The aim of the coalition offensive was to disable the newly resurgent al-Qaeda Emirate in Yemen by recapturing its capital, Mukalla. The battle led to a coalition victory, in which the Yemen's Southern Transitional Council gained control of Mukalla and the surrounding coastal areas.

On 15 May 2016, a suicide bombing in the southern Yemeni port city of Mukalla, the capital of the Hadhramaut province, killed at least 47 police and injured over 60. The bombing was preceded by an attack, where 15 Yemeni troops were killed in attacks on army positions outside Mukalla. ISIL said, one of its militants blew up a vehicle, packed with explosives, in an army base in the Khalf district at the city's eastern outskirts.

On 23 May 2016, two suicide bombings, conducted by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, killed at least 45 potential army recruits in Aden, Yemen. The first attack, which targeted a lineup, killed 20. The second attack, which occurred inside the base, killed 25. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant claimed responsibility for the attack. The attack was preceded by the 2016 Yemen Police bombings in the Yemeni city of Mukalla, which killed more than 48 people and injured over 60.

Riyan Airport prison in Yemen is a secret prison located in the cargo terminal in Riyan Airport in Yemen. The airport is a civilian one in the city of Mukalla. US special forces fighting al-Qaida are based close to this prison. Witnesses have claimed some detainees have been handed over to the US forces for further interrogation. According to Associated press, there are at least eighteen secret detention centers in Southern Yemen. According to Hussein Arab, Yemen Minister of Interior, these clandestine prisons are located in an airport, military bases and private villas. Senior American defense officials have acknowledged that US forces have been involved in interrogations of detainees in Yemen, however they have denied any mistreatment of the detainees.They said that there had not been any abuse when US forces were present. Allegedly there are at least 18 clandestine prisons across southern Yemen run by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) or by Yemeni forces. UAE’s government has denied the allegations.</ref>
