Kannada cinema, also known as Sandalwood, or Chandanavana, is the segment of Indian cinema dedicated to the production of motion pictures in the Kannada language widely spoken in the state of Karnataka. Kannada cinema is based in Gandhi Nagar, Bangalore. The 1934 film Sati Sulochana directed by Y. V. Rao was the first talkie film released in the Kannada language. It was also the first film starring Subbaiah Naidu and Tripuramba, and the first screened in the erstwhile Mysore Kingdom. It was produced by Chamanlal Doongaji, who in 1932 founded South India Movietone in Bangalore.
Srinivasa Sarja, better known by his stage name Arjun Sarja or simply Arjun, is an Indian actor, producer, and director who works predominantly in Tamil cinema in addition to Telugu and Kannada films and a few Malayalam and Hindi films. Referred to by the media and his fans as "Action King" for his roles in action films, Arjun has acted in more than 160 films, most of them being lead roles. He is one of few South Indian actors to attract fan following from multiple states of India. He has directed 12 films and also produced and distributed a number of films.
Darshan Thoogudeepa, known mononymously as Darshan, is an Indian actor, film producer, and film distributor who works predominantly in Kannada films. One of the leading contemporary actors of Kannada cinema, Darshan established the production house Thoogudeepa Productions in 2006. Its first production was Jothe Jotheyali, with Darshan in a special appearance. His performances in Anatharu (2007) and Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna (2012) won him praise from critics; his performance in the latter as the 19th-century warrior Sangolli Rayanna won him the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Actor.
Masala films of Indian cinema are those that blend multiple genres into one work. Masala films emerged in the 1970s and are still being created as of the 2020s. Typically these films freely blend action, comedy, romance, and drama or melodrama. They also tend to be musicals, often including songs filmed in picturesque locations.

Maanikya is a 2014 Indian Kannada-language action drama film directed by Sudeepa featuring himself, V. Ravichandran, Ranya Rao, Ramya Krishna, Varalaxmi Sharathkumar and P. Ravi Shankar in the lead roles. The film is a remake of 2013 Telugu film Mirchi. It was released on 1 May 2014. Upon its release, Maanikya got an excellent response from the critics and audience and had a good run at the box office. The satellite rights of the movie was sold for a huge amount. The film was later dubbed into Hindi under the same name by RKD Studios in 2015.
Kalenahalli Adaviswamy Dhananjaya, also known as Daali, is an Indian actor, lyricist and film producer known for his work in Kannada cinema. He has won three Filmfare Awards and four SIIMA Awards for his performances in various films.
V. Nagendra Prasad is a lyricist, composer and director who predominantly works for Kannada cinema. He has written more than 3000 songs, largely for Kannada cinema.
Nibunan (transl. Expert) is a 2017 Indian action thriller film co-written, co-produced and directed by Arun Vaidyanathan. The film features an ensemble cast of Arjun, Prasanna, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Sruthi Hariharan, and Vaibhav. It was Arjun's 150th film. Featuring music composed by Navin and cinematography by Arvind Krishna, the film began production in late 2015. The film was simultaneously filmed and released in Kannada as Vismaya (transl. Amazing).
Run Antony is a 2016 Indian Kannada action thriller film written and directed by Raghu Shastri, making his debut. Produced by Parvathamma Rajkumar, Raghavendra Rajkumar and Guru Rajkumar under Vajreshwari Hospitality banner, the film stars Vinay Rajkumar and debutants Sushmita Joshi and Rukshar Dhillon in the lead roles. The film's score and soundtrack is composed by Manikanth Kadri whilst the cinematography is by Manohar Joshi.
Nagarahavu (transl. Cobra) is a 2016 Indian Kannada language epic fantasy film directed by Kodi Ramakrishna, the final film directed by him before his death in 2019, and produced by Sajid Qureshi, Inbox Pictures Pvt Ltd.
Prema Baraha, titled Sollividava in Tamil, is a 2018 Indian romantic drama film written and directed by Arjun Sarja. It was produced by his wife Niveditha Arjun under his home studio of Sree Raam Films International and made simultaneously in Kannada and Tamil languages. The film stars Chandan Kumar and Aishwarya Arjun with different ensemble casts for the two versions. Jassie Gift composed the soundtrack and score. H. C. Venugopal was the director of photography and Kay Kay edited the film. The two versions of the film were released worldwide on 9 February 2018. It had a grand opening and became a commercial success at the box office of Karnataka, but had a decent run in Tamil.
Rukshar Dhillon is an Indian actress who primarily works in Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada films. Dhillon was born in London and raised in India. She made her debut in 2016 with the Kannada Run Antony. She went on to star in Telugu films such as Aakatayi, Krishnarjuna Yudham, and ABCD: American Born Confused Desi. In 2020 she appeared in the Hindi film Bhangra Paa Le.
Arjun Sarja is an Indian actor, producer and director who works predominantly in Tamil cinema and he also established his career in Telugu and Kannada cinema apart from a few Hindi and Malayalam films. He debuted as a child actor in the film Simhada Mari Sainya in the year 1981. Sarja had acted in more than 160 movies. He has directed 12 films and also produced and distributed a number of films. After starring in numerous Kannada films with minor roles, he starred in his first movie as an independent actor in Male Bantu Male. In 1984, Sarja made his Tamil Debut in Rama Narayanan's film Nandri. During the subsequent years he acted in many Telugu and Kannada films portraying lead and supporting roles in Trimurtulu (1987), Premagni (1989), Prathap (1990) and Shivanaga (1992).
Bhangra Paa Le is a 2020 Indian Hindi-language comedy-drama film, directed by Sneha Taurani and produced by Ronnie Screwvala. It stars Sunny Kaushal and Rukshar Dhillon. Initially planned to release on 13 September 2019 and then 1 November 2019, it was theatrically released in India on 3 January 2020.
Pan-Indianfilm is a term related to Indian cinema that originated with Telugu cinema as a mainstream commercial cinema appealing to audiences across the country with a spread to world markets. S. S. Rajamouli pioneered the pan-Indian films movement with duology of epic action films Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017), that changed the demography of Indian cinema. The term "pan-Indian film" is used for a film that is simultaneously marketed and released in multiple languages across India – Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam. Such films make an attempt to appeal to the audiences across the country, cutting across the linguistic, regional and cultural barriers.
Ashoka Vanamlo Arjuna Kalyanam is a 2022 Indian Telugu-language romantic comedy film directed by Vidya Sagar Chinta and written by Ravi Kiran Kola. Produced by SVCC Digital, the film stars Vishwak Sen, Ritika Naik, and Rukshar Dhillon. The plot follows Arjun Kumar Allam, a 33-year-old bachelor who gets engaged to Madhavi, however, she elopes before the wedding.
