Rob Hellyer (born June 28, 1992) is a Canadian professional lacrosse player. He is a forward and the captain for the Las Vegas Desert Dogs of the National Lacrosse League.

Early life

Hellyer was born on June 28, 1992, in Lion's Head, Ontario, Canada. [1] Growing up, he played junior lacrosse for Wiarton and was eventually called up by the Owen Sound North Stars’ organization to play with their Jr. B team. [2] Following this, Hellyer played four years of Jr. A with the Orangeville Northmen, scoring 117 goals and 171 assists for 288 points in 69 games. While with the team, he was named to the league's second all-star team and won the Minto Cup in 2012. [1] After his first year in Orangeville, Hellyer was drafted 30th overall by the Toronto Rock of the National Lacrosse League. [2]

Career

Following the 2010 draft, Hellyer made his NLL debut at the age of 18 due to an injury to Garrett Billings. He made his debut as the youngest player in the league on March 4, 2011, and scored a goal late in the third quarter to break a 9–9 tie. The Rock would eventually win and game and beat the Philadelphia Wings 15–10. [3] He remained with the team as they qualified for the 2011 NLL playoffs and won the National Lacrosse League Cup. [4] In spite of his play during the playoffs, Hellyer was not a consistent member in the Rock's lineup until the 2014 NLL season. [2]

During the 2016 off-season, Hellyer underwent knee surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee and was expected to miss the 2017 NLL season. [5] While recovering from surgery, he signed a 3-year contract extension to remain with the Rock. [6] During the 2020 NLL season, Hellyer reached the 500-career points mark in a 13–12 win over the Rochester Knighthawks. At the time of the game, he had a total of 190 goals and 314 assists for 504 career points. [7] At the conclusion of the season, Hellyer had scored 32 goals in 11 regular-season games to become a finalist for the NLL's Most Valuable Player. [8] Prior to the 2021 National Lacrosse League expansion draft, Hellyer was one of twelve players protected by the Rock. [9] Later in 2022 Rob would be traded to the Las Vegas Desert Dogs after he approached GM Jamie Dawick about a possible relocation to a team out west. [10]

Personal life

Hellyer works as a real estate agent for Century 21 through B.J. Roth Realty Ltd. Brokerage. [11]

He was also previously a scout for the Buffalo Bandits and assistant coach with the Colorado Mammoth. He was inducted to the NLL Hall of Fame in 2021 as a first ballot nominee.

Glenn Clark is the head coach of the Albany FireWolves and the former head coach of the Toronto Rock of the National Lacrosse League. He was also a former NLL player. Clark played in the NLL from 1998-2006 for both the Rock and the Philadelphia Wings. With the Rock, Clark won five NLL Championships. He also appeared in three National Lacrosse League All-Star Games, two with the Rock, and one with the Wings. In 2003, Clark played for Team Canada as they won the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships. In 2011, he became goaltending coach for Team Canada. Greer's cousin Shawn Thornton played in the National Hockey League for 14 seasons from 2002-2017.

Connor Fields is a Canadian-American professional lacrosse player who plays for Archers Lacrosse Club of the Premier Lacrosse League and the Rochester Knighthawks of the National Lacrosse League. He played college lacrosse at the University at Albany, where he was an All-American all four years. He was drafted by the San Diego Seals in the 2018 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft. He was also drafted in Major League Lacrosse by the Charlotte Hounds in 2018.

Nick Rose is a Canadian professional box lacrosse goaltender for the Toronto Rock of the National Lacrosse League (NLL). Originally drafted 28th overall by the Rock in the 2008 NLL Entry Draft, he spent time with the Boston Blazers and Calgary Roughnecks before returning to Toronto in 2012.

The Las Vegas Desert Dogs are a box lacrosse team in the National Lacrosse League. The team plays at Michelob Ultra Arena in Paradise, Nevada. The team began play in the 2023 NLL season.

The 2023 National Lacrosse League season, formally known as the 2022–2023 season, is the 36th in the history of the NLL. The season begins on December 2, 2022, and ends with the NLL final in late spring of 2023. This is the inaugural season for the expansion team Las Vegas Desert Dogs.


The Las Vegas Desert Dogs are a lacrosse team based in Las Vegas, Nevada playing in the National Lacrosse League (NLL). The 2023 season is the inaugural season for the franchise and will play their home games in the Michelob Ultra Arena. They are owned by Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai, former NHL player Wayne Gretzky, former NBA player Steve Nash and pro golfer Dustin Johnson. All games will be televised on MyLVTV and streamed on ESPN+.
