Robbie Hedges is the former chief of the Peoria tribe of Indians of Oklahoma. In 2000,she was the first woman elected to the position. Hedges,a former office manager,found that no other candidates existed when Chief Joe Goforth resigned. She decided to run in part based on the tradition of tribal service set by her grandmother,who lived to age 108. [1]
The Illinois Confederation,also referred to as the Illiniwek or Illini,were made up of 12 to 13 tribes who lived in the Mississippi River Valley. Eventually member tribes occupied an area reaching from Lake Michicigao (Michigan) to Iowa,Illinois,Missouri,and Arkansas. The five main tribes were the Cahokia,Kaskaskia,Michigamea,Peoria,and Tamaroa. The name of the confederation was derived from the transliteration by French explorers of iliniwe to Illinois,more in keeping with the sounds of their own language. The tribes are estimated to have had tens of thousands of members,before the advancement of European contact in the 17th century that inhibited their growth and resulted in a marked decline in population.
The Peoria Chiefs are a Minor League Baseball team of the Midwest League and the High-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. The team was established in 1983 as the Peoria Suns. They are located in Peoria,Illinois,and are named for the Peoria Indian tribe for which the city was named. In 2005,the team replaced the indigenous imagery associated with the Chiefs name and moved to a logo of a dalmatian depicted as a fire chief. The Chiefs play their home games at Dozer Park,which opened in 2002. They previously played at Vonachen Stadium near Bradley University from 1983 through 2001. The Chiefs have made the playoffs a total of 12 times,through seven wild-card berths,three first-half titles,and two second-half titles.
The Potawatomi,also spelled Pottawatomi and Pottawatomie,are a Native American people of the Great Plains,upper Mississippi River,and western Great Lakes region. They traditionally speak the Potawatomi language,a member of the Algonquin family. The Potawatomi call themselves Neshnabé,a cognate of the word Anishinaabe. The Potawatomi are part of a long-term alliance,called the Council of Three Fires,with the Ojibway and Odawa (Ottawa). In the Council of Three Fires,the Potawatomi are considered the "youngest brother" and are referred to in this context as Bodéwadmi,a name that means "keepers of the fire" and refers to the council fire of three peoples.
The Kaskaskia were one of the indigenous peoples of the Northeastern Woodlands. They were one of about a dozen cognate tribes that made up the Illiniwek Confederation,also called the Illinois Confederation. Their longstanding homeland was in the Great Lakes region. Their first contact with Europeans reportedly occurred near present-day Green Bay,Wisconsin,in 1667 at a Jesuit mission station.
The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation,also called Pine Ridge Agency,is an Oglala Lakota Indian reservation located almost entirely within the U.S. state of South Dakota,with a small portion in Nebraska. Wilma Pearl Mankiller was a Native American activist,social worker,community developer and the first woman elected to serve as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. Born in Tahlequah,Oklahoma,she lived on her family's allotment in Adair County,Oklahoma,until the age of 11,when her family relocated to San Francisco as part of a federal government program to urbanize Native Americans. After high school,she married a well-to-do Ecuadorian and raised two daughters. Inspired by the social and political movements of the 1960s,Mankiller became involved in the Occupation of Alcatraz and later participated in the land and compensation struggles with the Pit River Tribe. For five years in the early 1970s,she was employed as a social worker,focusing mainly on children's issues.

Chief Illiniwek was the mascot of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC),associated with the university's intercollegiate athletic programs,from October 30,1926,to February 21,2007. Chief Illiniwek was portrayed by a student to represent the Illiniwek,the state's namesake,although the regalia worn was from the Sioux. The student portraying Chief Illiniwek performed during halftime of Illinois football and basketball games,as well as during women's volleyball matches.

Billy Caldwell,baptized Thomas Caldwell,known also as Sauganash,was a British-Potawatomi fur trader who was commissioned captain in the Indian Department of Canada during the War of 1812. Today the majority of the people are associated with the Mohegan Indian Tribe,a federally recognized tribe living on a reservation in the eastern upper Thames River valley of south-central Connecticut.
